Charles Darwins Transmutation of species.
Charles Darwin, a passenger on the HMS Beagle arrived at the Galapagos Islands in September 1835. During his time there he began to notice despite the islands close proximity, each one had species that were unique. this led him to believe that they had a common ancestor. In one of his journals specifically dedicated to his thoughts from 1837 - 38 he illustrates an idea he called "The transmutation of species." where he clearly shows new species branching off from one common ancestor. -
On the Origin of Species
Charles Darwin's book "On The Origin Of Species" was published in 1859, introducing his theory of evolution claiming that all living things had come from one common ancestor through a branching pattern of evolution. this was made possible by a process called natural selection in which a species that is better adapted for its environment will reproduce and pass on its genes while the less suited would die. resulting in the evolution of the species. -
The Descent of Man,
The Descent of Man, was published in 1871, it takes his theory of evolution and applies it into the evolution of man. he discuses the ways in which mankind has developed as well as the differences that exist in the human race. concluding that "to deny a common descent would be unreasonable. only prejudice and arrogance, would explain a rejection of this evidence." Darwin claimed that our ancestors were descended from barbarians and that mankind should be proud to originate from "lowly origins." -
Darwins effect on modern science.
We know Charles Darwin was not the first to entertain the idea of evolution but it is his ideas that the basis of modern evolutionary science is based. it is because of Darwin's theory of evolution that we are able to easily and clearly explain the early development of mankind and its origins.
