Salvador Allende was born on June 26th, 1908, in Valparaíso Chile. He was the son of Salvador Allende Castro and Laura Gossens Uribe. He was apart of an upper-middle-class family that had a long tradition in progressive politics. -

Salvador Allende goes to College
During his young life, Allende was taught by an anarchist shoemaker, Juan De Marchi, who promoted revolution and radical politics. Allende was arrested multiple times while a student at the University of Chile for protesting against the government. After receiving his medical degree in 1932, he co-founded Chile's Socialist Party. -
Salvador Allende gets Married
In 1940, he married Hortensia Bussi, then they had three daughters, Carmen Paz, Isabel and Beatriz. Before Allende got married he entered Politics. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1937. -
Speech by Victor Jara
Jara's role in Chilean society was not limited to his musical output. A supporter of the Popular Unity party, Jara publicly spoke on Salvador Allende's behalf. So that is how Salvador and Jara were connected. -

Salvador Allende and Fidel Castro
One month before the coup, Castro wrote to Allende, calling on him to mobilise the Chilean working class, which had never failed to support against the coup danger. The working class “can block those who are organizing a coup, maintain the support of the fence-sitters, impose its conditions, and decide the fate of Chile once and for all”. -
Salvador Allende dies
On September 11, 1973, General Augusto Pinochet led a military coup d'état to overthrow Allende, who refused to surrender and barricaded himself in the Presidential Palace. During the siege, a large number of civilians were killed or wounded and many were imprisoned. -
CIA
Reports regarding whether Allende committed suicide or was killed by soldiers taking over the palace after it was attacked by the Chilean Air Force. Allegations that the CIA instigated the coup are unfounded, though later the CIA acknowledged its support of the political opposition and advance knowledge of the coup. In 2011, Allende's body was exhumed, and a scientific autopsy confirmed he had died by suicide.
