    Saint Teresa wrote a number of classical books through out her life which included:
    Interior Castles or the Mansions, way of perfection, Life of Saint Teresa of Jesus, of the order of Our Lady of Carmel, foundations
    She obtained the highest degree of prayer and gained knowledge through prayer of the divine things that in 1970 Pope Paul VI named her the first woman Doctor of the Church.

    Saint Teresa of Avila was born in Gotarrendura which was where her was located in Avila,Old Castile, Kingdom of Spain. She was born on the 25th of March 1515. Saint Teresa of Avila may also be called Saint Teresa of Avila and was baptized as Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada.

    Teresa had attempted to run away with her brother Roderigo who were both at a similar age of seven. They had both planned to go on a 'youthful endeavor' to become martyrs of the Church. Their plan of survival on the way was to simply beg like the poor did however their trip was soon cut short as they bumped into an uncle along the way who brang the children back to their awaiting parents and a very distressed mother. Their next plan was to become hermits.Their parents were a religous influence.

    Saint Teresa of Avila was the 3rd child of ten children, her father Don Alfonso Sanchez de Capeda was a Spanish merchant and her birth mother Dona Beatriz Davila y Ahumadawas her fathers second wife, they were both practising Catholics.Unfortunately Teresa lost her mother at a young age of 15 leaving Teresa distraughted. Before her mothers death Teresa was so close to her mother due to her father being extremely strict. Her mother died in the year 1530.

    Studies and schooling

    Teresa was also sent for her education to the Augustinian nuns at Avila.However, due to unfortunate illness she was in school only a short period before having no other choice but to be sent home. She used her illness as an excuse to stop prayer, however that soon changed when she began to have visions of Gods presense which lead to extreme devotion towards the Catholic Faith. Saint Teresa leaves to the Carmelite Monastery of incarnation with out her fathers consent.

    After recieving permission Saint Teresa established a new foundation of covenent called; Discalced Carmelite Nuns of the Primitive Rule of Saint Joseph at Avila. She began with only 3 nuns and her niece.A few years later she established a new Covenent for men that was put in care of Saint John of the Cross who at the time was a priest. At aged 52 she visited all the founded convents of the nuns who followed her which was a total of 17 woman convents and 15 male monastries.

    With Saint Teresas mystical experiences considered them Gods dive blessing. She meditated for long hours the prayer of quiet and the prayer of union. During this time she would experience a feeling of detachable death of which her soul became awake to God. She was then lead to believe that these signs ( such as visions, audible sensations, ecstasy etc ) may not be from God but from the devil. Her and many others believed that she was being manipulated by the devil.

    Saint Teresa of Avila lived till the age of only 67 on the 4th of October 1582. She passed away at Alba de Tormes, Salamanca, Kingdom of Spain. Her shrine is locacted in the Convent of the Annunciation, Alba de Tormes, Spain. She remains a significant figure in the Church and her feast day is on the 15th of October.
  • Canonized and Beatified

    Canonized and Beatified
    Saint Teresa of Avila was canonized by Pope Gregory XV in Rome on the 12th of March 1622. She was beatified by Pope Paul V also in Rome on the 24th of April 1614. Saint Teresa is the Patron of people who suffer from head aches and other ilnesses as well as catholic writers and workers.
