    Bishop Sheil excommunicated Mary MacKillop on Friday, 22 September 1871.

    On his deathbed, the bishop ordered her excommunication rescinded.
  • Mary Travels to Rome

    Mary travels to Rome on 28 March to
    seek approval of the Rule written by Fr
    Julian. The Pope approves of the Rule

    Cardinal Moran returns with the news on
    11 November that Mary is to step down
    as Mother General. Mother Bernard
    appointed Superior General.
  • Death of Mary's Mother

    Death of Mary’s mother, Flora, on 30
    May. Flora drowned when the Ly-ee Moon ship was wrecked off Eden on the
    NSW South Coast.

  • Mary's First Miracle

    MacKillop's first miracle took place in 1961, when a 23-year-old leukemia-stricken woman, given less than a month to live, prayed to MacKillop and recovered.

    Kathleen Evans, who was cured of inoperable lung cancer in 1994, as Mother Mary's second and final miracle.
  • Mary's Beatification

    Pope John Paul II declares Mary a Saint
    in Australia at a Beatification
    Celebration at Randwick in Sydney on
    19 January. Mary named ‘Blessed Mary
    MacKillop’.
  • Canonization of Mary

    Pope Benedict XVI canonised Mary in Rome on 17 October 2010.
