Fort Sumter
Description: The battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle in the Civil War. Both Sides agreed that this was the first shots of the war. After Fort Sumter was sieged on and their supplies ran out, they surrendered. But due to a misfire, a cannon fired and killed someone upon explosion. This was the first death in the Civil War. -
First Battle of Bull Run
Description: The First Battle of Bull Run is a very important battle in the Civil War and one of the first major land battles. The battle began when Union troops outnumbered and attacked the Confederate troops in Bull Run. Soon the Rebels decided to rally up and flank the Union, causing the tides to turn and forcing the Union to run. This was a Confederate victory. In all, there were 3,000 Union casualties and 1,750 Confederate casualties. This made 4,750 casualties in total. -
Battle of Wilson's Creek
Description: In the battle of Wilson’s Creek, it started when Union Brigadier Lyon decided to attack two Confederate armies close by Wilson’s Creek. This war went on for 5 hours which ended up with 2,500 total casualties including the Union leader Lyon. The next in command took over Lyon’s place and made the rest of the soldiers retreat which meant that the Confederates to win this war. -
Battle of Santa Rosa Island
Description: In the Battle of Santa Rosa Island, a Confederate army decided to go to Santa Rosa Island to attempt to ambush the Union camp there and capture Fort Pickens. When they arrived they were able to successfully ambush a volunteer rebel group and continued the march towards the camp. The Union army there however, were able to get reinforcements and beat the Confederates forcing them to retreat. This was a Union victory. -
Battle of Belmont
Description: In the Battle of Belmont, a Union army that was commanded by General Ulysses S. Grant successfully attacked and claim a camp in Belmont to have control of the area. The Union was soon overrun and had to retreat when Confederate reinforcements arrived and pushed them back. This was a Confederate victory but Grant said he was victorious even though he couldn’t control the camp. -
Battle of the Ironclads
Description: The Battle of the Ironclads was the first naval battle in U.S. history. This battle was between the ships Merrimack and Ironclad and was the Confederate’s effort to break through the Southern Union blockade. At the end of the fight, the battle turned out to be inconclusive and the winner was not clear. -
Battle of Shiloh
Description: The Battle of Shiloh was one of the big early attacks in the American Civil War. The battle started when the Confederate Army did a surprise attack on the Union army who were under the command of general Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederate Army was successful on the ambush but were not able to hold and protect the position and was forced to retreat. This battle ended up with 23,000 casualties and the Union victory. -
The Battle of Winchester
Description: In the battle of Winchester, it was a battle between Union General Philip Sheridan’s army and Confederate General Jubal Early’s army. The Union then started advancing. This advance was delayed which allowed the Confederate General Early send his main force to stop the assault. This attempt failed and caused Early to retreat back to Winchester. Early then did another attempt to defend Winchester and lost which caused him to retreat the area and give the Union the victory. -
Seven Days Battle
Description: In the Seven Days battle, Confederate General E. Lee did a successful attempt to stop Union General George B. McClellan from advancing and capturing the Confederate capital Richmond. General E. Lee and General George B. McClellan’s army clashed for seven days. Lee and his army won and pushed the Union back successfully protecting Richmond. This was a Confederate Victory. -
Second Battle of Bull Run
Description: In the Second Battle of Bull Run, a large Union force under the command of John Pope was waiting for Union George McClellan’s army for a combined attack. Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee took this moment to attack the Union army and split his army up. The Confederates attacked the Union’s supply base and while the Union was worn out and tired of that wave, the rest of Lee’s army which cause John Pope to retreat the area. This was a victory for the Confederates. -
Battle of Antietam
Description: The Battle of Antietam was the Pinnacle of Confederate General Robert E Lee’s attempt to invade the north. This battle was a fight against Confederate army commanded by Robert E. Lee and the Union army commanded by Union General George McClellan. This was a Union victory but was one of the most bloodiest one day battles in U.S. History with 23,000 casualties. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
Description: The Battle of Fredericksburg started when the Union army started bombarding the town with heavy firepower. After the bombardment, the Union charged into town looking for any Confederate soldiers still there after the bombardment. Confederates were continuously pushed back until they made their final stand on Mary’s Heights. They hid strategically behind a stone wall to give themselves the advantage of cover. The Union won and were able make the Confederates retreat. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
Description: In the Battle of Chancellorsville Confederate General Robert E. Lee made a tough decision to either retreat or fight an army that was twice his size. Lee decided to fight and split his army for a tactical advantage which led them to victory. This was a very big Confederate victory. -
Battle of Vicksburg
Description: The siege of Vicksburg started when the Union made a campaign to control the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg. The Union then set a 47-day siege on the stronghold and successfully controlled it. This caused the Confederates to lose a critical supply line and was part of the Union’s plan to stop any type of outside trade to the Confederates. -
Battle of Gettysburg
Description: The Battle of Gettysburg is one of the most important battles in the Civil War. The battle started when Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to go on the offensive again and attack the North. Lee arrived in Harrisburg and pushed back the Union army that was there. The armies then clashed and entered a bloody battle near the Devil’s Den. After a long time of fighting, the Confederates were forced to retreat and go back into defensive lines. This was a hard-fought Union victory. -
The Battle of the Wilderness
Description: The Battle of the Wilderness was the first part of the Union’s offensive advance towards the Confederate capital Richmond. The Confederate General Robert E. Lee was confident he could hold off the Union forces in the wilderness because the Union's numerical advantage got negated by the thick woods. The Union which was led by General Ulysses S. Grant then entered the forest and after a two day battle, they decided to end on a tactical draw. Grant decided to keep the offensive still. -
Battle of Petersburg
Description: The Battle of Petersburg was a faceoff against the Union army led by General Ulysses S. Grant and the Confederate army led by General Robert E. Lee. The battle went on for 9 months with trenches that stretched all the way up to 30 miles long. Confederate supplies then started getting low and the Union started to put a lot of pressure on the Confederates. This forced Lee’s army to retreat and give up Petersburg and the Confederate capital Richmond. -
Appomattox
Description: After retreating Petersburg, Confederate General Robert E. Lee fled into Appomattox, where he planned to gather the remnants of his tired and worn out troops, meet reinforcements at North Carolina, then resume fighting. But when the Union arrived into Appomattox, They had the battle of the Appomattox Court house, which only lasted for a few hours, bringing the surrender of Robert E. Lee, and the end to a 4 year Civil War. -
Lincoln's Assassination
Description: A person called John Wilkes Booth, was a famous actor and Confederate sympathizer and was the person to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s theatre in Washington D.C. This happened only five days after General Robert E. Lee’s surrender which ended the Civil War. The killers were immediately looked for with a $100,000 dollar bounty. The killers were then captured and sentenced in life to prison
