    Crowning of Nicholas ii
    Nicholas II was a tsar of Russia beginning in 1894. He was described by many as an incompetent ruler because he did not pay attention to the people and what they needed at the time, such as food, housing and clothing, etc. He was descibed by his advisors as "living in a fools paradise". A Man named Rasputin was a key member of Nicholas II government and he abused his power. Nicholas retained for himself the right to control the orthodox church, the most powerful church in Russia.

    The Russo-Japenese war was a war during Nicholas II rule. Nicholas II wanted to expand the Russian Empire. One of the places they attacked was japan. The Russian empire was defeated which led to open criticism of the Russian Government.
  • 1905 Revolution

    1905 Revolution
    In 1905 revolution began amoung the workers and sailors because they were given rotten food and tattered clothing. When they requested fresh food it was ordered that they were to be shot. However, the firing squad rebelled against the orders and threw the navy officers overboard. All across Russia, inductrial workers went on strike to support the sailors. Nicholas II responded by passing the October Manifesto and creating the Duma, a new organization that would oversee the passing of new laws.

    Bloody Sunday
    In 1905, a priest named Gregory Gapon decided to lead a procession of workers marching towards the winter palace. The workers purpose for marching was to make a plea to the Tsar to give them food to help them live and to lessen their work hours. But when they got close to the palace the tsars soldiers fired at the workers, killing hundreds and wounding thousands. It was this day that the workers first viewed the tsar as a self-obsessed tyrant. This day became known as bloody Sunday.

    In March 1917, the workers requested a pay increase. When they were not given pay they began to rebel. Soldiers were ordered by Nicholas II to stop the rebellion but the soldiers joined with the workers instead. In response to this Nicholas II ordered tghe Duma to disband. The Duma refused and they met to created the Providional Government. On March 15th Nicholas II abdicated the throne to his brother, who refuased the throne. This was the end of Tsars in Russia.

    October Revolution
    In 1917, Vladimir Lenin was leading the Bolsheviks and wanted to overthrow the Provisional Government, a temporary government put in place after the failure of the Duma. They began taking over railway stations and banks and eventually surrounded the Winter Palace while the government people were inside. The Bolshiveks entered the palace and arrested the government officials. The Soviet government was handed over and Lenin was declared the Chairman.

    In 1917, Alexander Kerensky began assembling troops in the north front that were against the new government. Later on General Lavr Kornilov's volunteer army that numbers 3,000 joins with this army, And over the next few months the Cadets, Mensheviks, and SR joined the struggle against the bolsheviks. This army came to be known as the white army while the bolsheviks came to be known as the red army.
  • Treaty of Brest-Litvosk

    Treaty of Brest-Litvosk
    In december 3rd, 1917, the treaty of Brest-Litvosk was put in place. The treaty was an agreement between Russia and Germany during WWI. The agreement stated that Russia would be allowed to leave WWI with the price of handing over conqered lands to Germany to help them in the war.

    Russian Civil War ends
    Towards the end of the war the red army was expanding and had over 500,000 solders in its ranks. Many bolsheviks were afraid that these soldiers would betray and kill their own men. To combat this fear Trotsky imposed a punishment for anyone who did betray. Later on a man named Peter Wrangel took control of the white army but could not combat the red forces, so the white army lost the war.
