  • February Revolution

    February Revolution
    It caused the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II, the end of the Romanov dynasty, and the end of the Russian Empire. The Tsar was replaced by a Russian Provisional Government under Prince Georgy Lvov. The Provisional Government was an alliance between liberals and socialists who wanted political reform.

    Soldiers directed by the Military Revolutionary Committee of the Petrograd Soviet captured the Winter Palace, ending the power of the Russian Provisional Government and gave the power to the local soviets dominated by Bolsheviks.

    Fought between the Bolshevik Red Army and the White Army, the loosely allied anti-Bolshevik forces. Many foreign armies warred against the Red Army, notably the Allied Forces and the pro-German armies.The Red Army defeated the White Armed Forces of South Russia in Ukraine and the army led by Aleksandr Kolchak in Siberia in 1919.
  • The Moldavian Democratic Republic declared its independence from Russia.

    The Bolsheviks signed an armistice with the Germans hoping to delay the peace treaties because they thought there might be a Communist revolution in Germany too. This didn’t happen, and the German armies advanced, so the Bolsheviks quickly agreed to the harsh terms of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in March 1918.

    It is the Stalin’s way to finish with his enemies. Old Communists like Zinoviev and Kamenev were arrested and charged in Show Trials. One claim was that the exiled Trotsky was plotting with senior leaders to take power.Many of the most able citizens had disappeared. The army and navy was weakened by the loss of most senior officers. Industrial progress was hampered by the loss of top scientists.
  • The Nazi-Soviet Pact

    The Nazi-Soviet Pact
    Representatives from Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union met and signed the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, which guaranteed that the two countries would not attack each other. By signing this pact, Germany had protected itself from having to fight a two-front war in the soon-to-begin World War II; the Soviet Union was awarded land, including parts of Poland and the Baltic States.
