Introduction
Jessica who likes to be known as Jessie lives happily with her family in Clifton Village. But, little did she know she lives in a historical preserve and tourists come to this preserve to see the villagers. Recently the people of this village have been held captive by Miles Clifton the founder of Clifton Village. -

Present Time Line
In “Running out of Time”, by Margaret Peterson Haddix, present time is really 1996 but to Jessie it is really 1840 in Indiana. She has no idea she is living in a historical village and being held captive by Miles, Clifton, and the guards of the village. -
Diphtheria Outbreak in Clifton!
In the town of Clifton the kids break out with Diphtheria. So Jessie goes with Ma to help treat some of the kids who have this disease. Diphtheria is a contagious disease spread by direct contact or breathing the airborne germs of infected individuals. -
Jessie Must Do Something Very Dangerous!
Ma tells Jessie that she lives in a historical preserve. Although the kids think that it is 1840, in present day it is really 1996. Jessie's mother is a birth maid but secretly at night she sneaks out and acts like a doctor. Ma puts up a sign for whomever is sick but Ma was threatened and took the sign down. So, Ma tells Jessie that she must go out of Clifton and call Mr. Neely who was against Mr. Clifton not providing the kids with the medical care of 1996. -
Jessie Sneaks Out!
After Ma tells Jessie that tourists were always watching her as she puts the 19th century clothes on, Ma shows Jessie the manhole and she climbes out into the outside world of Clifton into present day Indiana. She is no longer in the 1840s but instead she finds herself in the modern world of 1996. What a difference. -
The Adventure Begins.
After leaving the gas station Jessie journeys more towards the state capital. She encounters two supposedly drunk people who try and get her into the car. After loosing them Jessie ventures to KFC where she calls Mr. Neely and she gets picked up by him. -
Jessie Finds Out a Secret
Jessie breaks out of out of Clifton; and an old man tells Jessie that the water she was about to drink was from a stream that was poisonous. So Jessie goes to a gas station to find a phone and get something safe to drink. She calls Mr. Nelly but he is not there. She leaves the gas station and continues her journey. -
Danger!
Mr. Neely assumes Jessie was tired so he lets her sleep in the guest room and gave her some water. Jessie was not thirsty so she dumped the water out of the two story window. Jessie could not sleep so she laid in bed listening to Mr. Neely's phone calls. As she listened she realized that Mr. Neely poisoned the water that she threw out of the window and he was plotting to kill her! Jessie goes and escapes out of the window. -
Jessie is Out in the Open.
After escaping, Jessie calls for a news conference. The news reporters come to the conference and Jessie tells them the entire story. Jessie does finally get diphtheria and is taken to the hospital. -
The Beginning of a New Life
Jessie finally wakes up from a deep sleep and finds that all of her siblings are in wheelchairs beside her. She also finds out that Clifton was really made to create a stronger race of people. She sees her Ma for the first time since leaving her behind at Clifton. -
The End of the Old Life in Clifton!
After being held in captivity for several months, Jessie is reunited with her parents. They watch over Clifton for a day and then start their new lives in the 19th Century. They leave Clifton for good and leave the 1840s behind them.
