Charlie's Father's Death
Charlie's father died in February, 1919. The affect Charlie's fathers death has caused was since then, Charlie's mother has not left the house and they became poorer. Charlie became the man in family and was responsible for nearly everything. -
Race at Darlington Parade
Runners are gathered Darlington Parade by Squizzy Talylor and Dasher. Then four teams included red, yellow, green and blue, Charlie was put into the red team. Participants had to deliver eggs to 200 Bourke Street Melbourne but during the race, the eggs must not be broken.
The race began and players fled off. Reaching the end, Charlie was in front and his eggs were announced in broken. He won. Squizzy shot him a wink earlier and later on telling him that he had hard-boiled them earlier. -
Barlow and his gang fighting Nostrils
Nostrils and Charlie were on their way back after delivering liquor but encountered Barlow's gang. Nostrils and Charlie began to run but Nosrtils fell and Charlie kept going. When the gang caught up, they gave Nostrils a swollen lip, broken ribs and a busted knee cap. Charlie was laying down on the side watching his best friend get beat up. He watched and felt fear. Charlie couldn't run out to help because he felt shame overwhelming him. -
Charlie Quits Working For Squizzy Taylor
Charlie came to Squizzy and explained about the missing trolley and Nostrils but all Squizzy wanted was for trolley to be returned. Charlie was filled with but still kept calm. He slowly took off the boots Squizzy gave him and then placed them on the table under Squizzy's nose. Squizzy pointed his handgun between Charlie's eyes and shot to the side. Squizzy ordered Charlie to leave before his aim gets better and Charlie did what he was told but still managed to feel remarkably fine. -
Nostrils Gets Invited To Charlie's Home
Nostrils was invited to Charlie's home and the first thing that happens was the two boys heading out the back to check on the duck. Nostrils knows some things about ducks and suggests he could help. Charlie named the duck Harriet and complained it wasn't giving them any eggs but Nostriks knew why. The answer was because the duck was a Harry and not a Harriet. When they went back inside, the had a cup of tea and then went out to play footy at Barkly Gardens, South Richmond. -
Charlie's Attempt At Learning Boxing
Mr Redmond offered Charlie to learn boxing and he took the offer straight away. The first day was a lot of skipping with nursery rhythms but there wasn't a second day. After finding Alice hated boxing, Charlie told Mr Redmond he wanted to retire. -
Charlie Pays the Money Instead
After returning from the bakery, Charlie decided to pay for Alice's Dad. He came to Squizzy Taylor holding all the money required including his own where he used to pay for Kenneth Cornwall. His plan didn't go as expected because Mr Cornwall ended up coming to Squizzy begging for extra time to pay. Charlie ended up being yelled at because of the situation and at the time, Squizzy wasn't in a good mood. -
Charlie Accepts the Job
Charlie went to Squizzy Taylor's place and Charlie received new boots from Squizzy. Dolly were there to help as Charlie tried them on. Squizzy welcomed Charlie and that was the beginning of Charlie's new job. -
Charlie's dance with his Ma
Charlie received a gramophone from Mr Redmond. He bought it home and had a dance with his Ma, they thought oh Charlie's father and talked about him. -
Rabbit Training
Mr Redmond trained Charlie for the upcoming mile race in Ballarat by rabbiting in Yarra Park. In the beginning, Charlie hesitated about whether or not he should enter the race but Mr Redmond told him about the prize money and he agreed. Mr Redmond was the only person training Charlie. -
Ballarat Mile Race
Charlie and Mr Redmond were in Ballarat together, Charlie was the youngest runner out of all the contestants. Charlie ran shoeless in the first race and came third which led him to the finals. In the final race, he ran with shoes on and at the last part, he pictured his loved ones and that motivated him to run faster and he ended up winning. He was the youngest person to ever win. -
Mr Peacock harasses Charlie's Ma
Charlie returned home and heard raised voices. He saw shattered glass on the kitchen floor and Mr Peacock harassing his Ma. Her lip was spilt and her eye was swollen. Charlie got a bat and hit across Mr Peacock's skull. There was a lifeless body on the floor and Ma told Charlie to leave so he did what he was told. -
The Football Game Richmond vs Tigers
Nostrils was playing for Ricmond while Barlow played for Tigers with Charlie, Mr Redmond and Mrs Redmond cheered. The final scores ended up with Richmond beating Tigers by twenty-two points. Nostrils was attacker and Barlow was the defender, Nostrils was better not by muscle but was better by skill and speed. -
Charlie Meets Alice at the Bakery.
Charlie went around getting back money that people owed Squizzy and someone living in Fitzroy were one of them, that person happened to be Alice. A bakery is where he had to go and the person serving customers was Alice. Charlie entered and nervously talked and ordered a cream bun as well. Barlow entered not long after but left soon. Charlie asked for Kenneth Cornwall, Alice's father, and they had a talk. The man didn't have the money, so Charlie left the bakery empty handed in the end. -
The Heath and Feehan Timber Company
With the money won by Charlie, the opened up something called The Heath and Timber Company. After everyone had a tour of the place Ma invited everyone back to her place and they all danced. There were lemonade, beer, caked and pastries. Charlie and Alice also danced together.
