Charlie competes in race to work for Squizzy Taylor
Charlie competed with three other boys that were of similar age. Each of them had a different colour Sash on. There was blue, green, yellow and Charlie was the colour red. The person wearing the blue Sash was Norman Heath. In yellow was Jimmy Barlow . In the end Charlie won but later found out that his egg had been hard boiled by Squizzy Taylor. -
Charlie's first week under Squizzy Taylor's employment
Squizzy Taylor made Charlie pick up creams and lotions for Dolly. At one point Squizzy trusted Charlie with money. Charlie as given brand new shoes as he was working for Squizzy but Charlie still respected his fathers shoes and after his work was done he would put his old shoes back on. -
Mr Peacock abused Charlie's mother
As Charlie came home from sprinting he saw mr. Peacock's mouth on Charlie's mums' neck. In between that Charlie's mum was crying. After a couple of weeks Charlie returned home from a run and saw mr. Peacock swearing at Charlie's mum. There was shattered glass everywhere, Charlie defended his mum by hitting Mr. Peacock with a cricket bat. -
Mr Redmond convinces Charlie to get trained for boxing.
Charlie recieves training from mr. Redmond, it involves skipping, the two effs ( footwork and finkin), sprinting at the speed of a dog and punching a kit bag from the war. Charlie then decides that he wants to resign because he wants to focus his energy on running. -
Charlie meets for the first time.
Mr. Heath, Mrs. Heath and Charlie go to Norman's football game. The game was between Richmond Hill and Fitzroy. Norman was playing for Richmond hill and Jimmy Barlow was playing for Fitzroy. Richmond Hill won the game by 22 points. Charlie stayed back to mingle back with the opposition and he saw a girl named Alice. She had red hair and was in a grey coat. Charlie became star struck as he stares at her. -
Gracie greets Mrs. Feehan
Gracie is sent from her mother to give bones and scraps to Mrs. Feehan, with tears in her eyes she offered Mrs. Feehan the pot. Mrs. Feehan asks what's upsetting her and Gracie first replies with "it's nothing Mrs. Feehan", then she blurted that it's not fair because she wanted her dog to have it and says that Mrs. Feehan has no right to have it. Mrs. Feehan gets angry and tells Gracie to take the scraps back and that Charlie, Jack and her are not dogs.they don't need scraps. -
Barlow and his friends hurt Norman.
After they dropped the refreshments, Charlie and Norman decided to take a walk in the park. just as were strolling, they saw 6 boys gathered near an elm trunk. The 6 boys were Barlow and his friends. Norman asked Barlow for some Footy tips, Charlie told Norman to pull his head in. Barlow and his gang chased Charlie and Norman. Norman got kicked in the ribs, punched in the jaw and was left there by Barlow. Charlie raced Norman to the hospital as Norman was developing foam in his mouth. -
Quiting from the employment of Squizzy Taylor
Charlie arrived at Squizzy Taylor's house and found out that Squizzy Taylor broke up with Dolly. Charlie then saw 6 men gathered in the office. They were drinking quite a lot.Charlie talked to the men about the beating that happened but Squizzy said he didn't care. Charlie was furious so quit. Squizzy lifted a gun up to Charlie's head and Charlie actually felt calm. Squizzy shot a bullet on the left side of Charlie's head and Charlie ran out of the house. -
staying at Mrs Pickwick's house
Since Charlie entered the Ballarat Mile with Mr. Redmond they needed a place to stay. they arrived and were escorted to the bedroom. They put their things in there and went to Centennial Park.Charlie practiced for a bit with his new spikes. The two arrived back just before 6 o'clock and had Rabbit Stew. -
winning the Ballarat Mile
Charlie and Mr. Redmond said goodbye to Mrs Pickwick and left. They arrived at the racetrack and Charlie put his spikes on. There was a call for the racers in heat one to come to the starting line. Just as the race was starting Charlie took off his spikes and joined the starting line. Charlie won the race and made it to the finals. He explained to Mr. Redmond that he didn't want to show his strength. The starter called for the finale. Charlie saw the note from Alice and won the race! -
Norman visited Charlie's house
A day after lunch Mr. Peacock visits Charlie, Jack and Mrs. Feehan. Mrs. Feehan didn't know so she went furious. Mr. peacock brought chicken which caused Mrs. Feehan to blush . After a while Norman was at the door and Charlie answered it. Charlie and Norman had tea then Norman helped Charlie realise Harriet was in fact a male and therefore a Harry. They went to Barkly Gardens in South Richmond to play Footy. Barlow threatened them and took their footy and they ran for their lives. -
Mrs. Feehan receives a letter from Squizzy Taylor
Since Charlie won the race he was given a letter to give to his mother to ask for permission whether or not Charlie could be employed for Squizzy Taylor. Mrs. Feehan laughs as Squizzy Taylor calls himself a business man not a rogue. After Mrs. Feehan has finished reading the letter she told Charlie that she can't allow it because Charlie would be keeping company with criminals. -
Collecting money from Kenneth Cornwall.
The last place on Charlie's list was a shop in Johnston street under the name, Kenneth Cornwall. He reached the cake shop cautiously as Fitzroy wasn't where he lived. He went inside the cake shop and saw Alice. Charlie was surprised and tried to hide his feelings by saying that he wanted a cream bun. Barlow came in and Charlie hid behind the counter. After Barlow left, Charlie had a talk with Kenneth. Kenneth said that he didn't have the money so Charlie payed his own money for Kenneth -
Charlie's father dies.
Charlie's father dies due to the Spanish flu when Charlie was aged 15. Charlie's father was diagnosed with the Spanish flu while it was
severely cold, since the Feehans weren't rich they didn't have the
opportunity to stay warm. Charlie's father was already sick so he suffered by lying in bed, coughing out blood until he died. He died at 7 Cubbit street, Richmond, Melbourne. -
collecting money from Mr.Albert Fox
Charlie was collecting debts for Squizzy Taylor. His first stop was at Spring street and went to visit Mr. Albert Fox. Mr Albert Fox was not convinced that Charlie was working for Squizzy Taylor but after Charlie threatened him with "If Mr. Taylor has to come down here with Knuckles in tow, they wont be sitting down for tea and biscuits." Mr. Albert Fox gave the money and Charlie quirked that the Apples were on the green side before making his way to Kenneth Cornwall.
