    There is no recorded date of ROse Greenhow's birthday but she was born between 1810 and 1817. She was born in Port Tobacco under the name of Maria Rossetta O'Neal.

    Murder of her Father
    Her father, John O'Neal, was mudured in the same year in which Rose was born. His murderer was one of his slaves, which led Rose to never believe in freeing slaves or giving blacks equal rights. Her mother was widowed with four daughters which she could not support, so she sent her two eldest daughter, one of which was Rose, to their Aunt and Uncle where they grew up politically involved.

    Rose and her family were in California when Robert fell six feet off of an elevated sidewalk, disabling his left leg and causing internal injuries and leading to his death. This left Rose a widow with four daughters to take care of.

    From 1857 to 1861, Rose created a highly developed ring of confederate spies including dentist, physicians, architects, clerks, professors, government worker, servants and cooks getting useful information. Some female spies hid secret messages in their long locks of hair. All spy notes were written by substituting one letter for another.

    At first, Rose was palced under house arrest, and while she was under arrest, she destroyed all evidence of her being a spy. On January 18, 1862, she was moved to an actual prison and her youngest daughter, nicknamed Little Rose, was permitted to stay with her. Although imprisoned, she continued to pass notes by using candles or bouncy balls that the guards gave her daughter.

    Rose was released from prison a little more than a year of being imprisoned. Although she was free, she was banned from the North and was immediately sent to the South where she was more than welcome.

    Rose was on her way back to the US when her ship was wrecked and they had to make it rest of the way on rowboats. Earlier Rose thought she might get caught for being a spy so she sewed her earnings in the hem of her dress. When her rowboat was wrecked, the weight of the gold coins dragged her down to the bottom of the ocean. She as the only person that died.
