Reaganomics
Reaganomics- to trickle down economics. Critics believed Reagan's policy would help corporations and wealthy Americans, while only a little bit of the wealth would "trickle down" to average Americans. -
Building Up Millitary
In Regean's foreign policy he rejects both containment and detente. He calls the Soviet Union "an evil empire" and in his view we shouldn't negotiate with them. -
Cutting Programs
Cutting tax rates, meant that the government would end up with less money. Budget deficit- the amount by which expenditures exceed income, was increased. To keep it under control, Reagan cut social programs. -
Military Build Up Cuasing Deficit
Reagan's military build up drove the federal budget deficit higher and higher, but it increased military spending while also helping the economy expand, by providing jobs in defense programs. -
Star Wars and Nuclear War
Reagan tried to make a deal with the Soviet Union to remove missiles if they did. The Soviets refused. Reagan believed that mutual assured destruction was immoral. So in March of 1983, he proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative. (Star Wars) This meant thatdevelopment of weapons could intercept and destroy incoming missiles. -
The Iran Contran Scandal
The Reagan administration began secretly arming an anti-Sandinista guerilla force known as contras. Congress banned further aid to the Contras. Individuals in Regan's administration continued to illegally support these guerillas by sending guns to them in exchange for American hostages. -
Deregulation
Reagan wants to control the prices on gasoline and oil. The prices are getting too high. When Reagan signed an executive order on eliminating price controls on gas and oil, the prices dropped and freed up money. -
Aid to Afghanistan
President Carter sent $30 milliion in military aid to Afghan guerillas, but Regan sent $570 million more. The Soviets were soon trapped and ended up withdrawing in 1988.
