Providence is founded in 1636
After Roger Williams was banished from Massachusetts, he gathered his things and, “fled into the wilderness” (History.com Staff). He then founded Providence, then eventuallyt founded the rest of Rhode Island along with Anne Hutchinson. -
Pequot War
During the Pequot War, the Pequots tried to form an alliance with the Narragansetts. It didn’t work because of Roger Williams, who annulled their alliance, which resulted in a disagreement, then after, a massacre that May (Keenan). -
Coddington joins Rhode Island
Exiles led by William Coddington are exiled from Boston and join the rest of Rhode Island in search for religious freedom as well as Williams once did (“Rhode Island Founded”). -
Coddington leaves Rhode Island
Coddington and his people do not get along with the rest of Rhode Island and move apart from Providence and began the plantation of Newport, Connecticut (“Rhode Island Founded”). -

Quakers start to rise
Throught the 1670s, the Quakers, "...were gaining political power in Rhode Island" (History.com Staff). -
King Phillip’s War starts
During the year 1675, King Phillip’s War starts, where the Wampanoag, Narragansett, and Nipmuck tribes teamed up against English settlers, like Williams. The three Indian tribes put together eventually lost this war ("Roger Williams"). -
Williams' death
Sometime in 1683, with the exact date being unknown, Roger Williams dies in Providence, Rhode Island (“Roger Williams”). -
