In 1956, Presley's song "Heartbreak Hotel" becomes number 1. That same year his self-titled album "Elvis Presley" reaches number 1. The year 1956 also brought him an acting gig with Paramount Pictures. -

After being drafted into the army in 1957, Presley returns to entertainment. He comes back and continues to make chart toppers, such as music from his film "GI Blues". -

The Beatles tour the US for the first time and break TV viewing records on the "Ed Sullivan Show." This made them the first British band to make it into the US music scene and increased their popularity drastically. -
Awarded the MBE
Queen Elizabeth awards the four musicians the MBE (Members of the British Empire). John returns his in 1969, partly in protest at British support of the US in the Vietnam War. -

"Rubber Soul" is released and sees the group departing from their rock and roll roots for the first time. -
The King of Rock
Towards the late 1960's, Elvis Presley began to lose his box office appeal. In 1968 he recorded his first TV special which is often called the "'68 Comeback". This TV special wowed audiences with his performance, which showcased his talents as a singer and a guitarist. -
The End of The Beatles
Final studio session for a Beatles record - but with only Ringo Starr there. No formal announcement is mad , but the news that the Beatles are no more appears on April 10. The thirteen and last album, "Let it be" is released on May 8 and the film was premiered in London on May 20.
