Although the philosophers did influence many of the basic guidelines of the Declaration of Independece, the authors of the Declaration did not start thinking about these things until way after the British were out of America/ -

The English and the colonists fight against the French and Native Americans over territory.

This is only the cause of the British to start taxing the colonists to pay for war debts, the colonists won't revolt unless the British get ridiculous in the taxing. -

The colonists did not follow this rule.

This is one of the first times the British actually try to tell the colonists what to do, which is not going to go over well. -
Stamp Act
Stamp ActThis was a tax the British declared all printed documents had to have a stamp. The colonists boycotted British goods and because of this the act was repealed.

Although the colonists were upset about the tax and actually fought for their beliefs, this wasn't the first act the British had tried to make. -
Boston Massacre

The British are now willing to kill to get their way, alarming the colonists, this only serves as a warning to the colonists. -
Boston Tea Party

They then threw hundreds of cases of British tea into the Boston Harbor.

This is the first formal protest against the British taxes and it awakens the British to see the colonists rebeling, this also causes the Intolerable Acts, which leads to more tension. -
Tea Act

This is only the cause of the Boston Tea Party and the final Act that the colonists decided to make a big deal about. -
First Continental Congress

They decide to write a letter to King George III asking him to repeal the acts. He denies the request.

This is the first time the colonists come together and choose representatives to act like a formal government as a Union. This proves they don't need the British to lead them. -

This pushes the colonists even more towards hatred of the British, but the colonists don't actually do anything until two years later. -
Lexingtion and Concord
[Lexington and Concord](<a href='http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/255624/paul-reveres-ride-john-j-miller)' >Lexington and Concord</a>British troops thought weapons were being held in Concord, Massachusetts. As they were approaching Concord, they ran into a miltia of many volunteered colonists at Lexington. The militia used guerilla warfare against the troops, but the British won.

In many ways, this event started off the Revolutionary War, the English now realize that the colonists are ready to fight for their independence and will do anything to get what they want. -
Second Continental Congress

The delegates were 50/50 about this issue. At the end, most decided to support independence and they set up a committee to write a declaration.
