Road to Revolution

  • The French and Indian War

    The French and Indian War
    This war was between France and Britain, they were fighting against one another because each wanted major territory parts in North America. It ended in 1763.
  • The Proclamation of 1763

    The Proclamation of 1763
    The Proclamation was created to gain more territory in America, and the British wouldn't let Americans build along the Appalachian Mountains. This angered the colonists because they felt it was made to keep them under the control of England.
  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
    The people were being forced by the British to pay a 6 pence tax for sugar and molasses, however most people would try to evade these taxes. So, instead of making it 6 pence they changed it to 3 in hopes this would help to bring back their market.
  • Stamp Act of 1766

    Stamp Act of 1766
    This was the first true tax that the British made the colonists do. Their intention was to replenish the economy because of the war, so they made the colonists pay for any legal documents because they needed a tax stamp on it. This date was the repeal.
  • Townshend Acts of 1767

    Townshend Acts of 1767
    The purpose of this act was to raise the price people had to pay for taxes in the North American colonies. This caused many protests by the people.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    This event happened when a mob attacked the British soldiers, things were thrown and gunshots were fired. In the end about 5 people were killed and in the following days many more protests and brawls broke out.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    This act made it so that a company sent by Great Britain could directly ship the tea to the colonies and that they could sell this tea too. But, the people didn't really like this because they thought that it was trying to persuade them to support the taxes that they already had to pay.
  • Boston Tea Party

    At the Boston Tea Party tens of hundreds of people dumped tea off of a ship in protest for the taxes on tea that the British were making them pay.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    The Intolerable Acts were passed because of the defiance of the colonists in the Boston Tea Party. It was also passed to assert authority and punish the colonists who partook in the Boston Tea Party.
  • 1st Continental Congress

    1st Continental Congress
    The first Continental Congress were delegates from all of the 13 colonies who came together in regards of the Intolerable acts. The Continental Congress would later serve as the government for the 13 colonies.
