Treaty of Paris 1763
This treaty ended the French and Indian War. British doubles size of their colonies all the way from Atlantic to Mississippi. -
Proclamation of 1763
Issued by the British King, prevented colonists from expanding into the new territory that they achieved during the war because they feared rebellion from the Native Americans. -
The Sugar Act
First taxed placed on colonists. Purpose was to raise money to pay for the French and Indian war. -
The Stamp Act
Required that many printed materials in the colonies be taxed. -
Quartering Act
Required colonists to provide housing for soldiers if necessary. This particular act really infuriated the colonists. -
The Stamp Act Congress
Meeting in New York consisting of representatives of British colonies. -
Townshend Acts
The Townshend acts taxed Americans on imported goods. Britain also used this as a way to assert their control over the colonies. -
Townshend Acts Repealed
All Townshend acts were repealed except for the tax on tea. There was a lot of pressure on the British merchants, so this act was repealed. British also wanted to keep the impression that they had the right to tax the colonists. -
Boston Massacre
Small fight between British soldiers and colonists. 5 deaths. -
The Tea Act
Goal was to raise funds, and also support the British East India Company. -
Boston Tea Party
Sons of Liberty dressed as native Americans and went on a British ship and threw vast amounts of tea overboard. They did this as a protest to the Tea Act. -
Intolerable Acts
These laws were meant as a punishment for the colonists because of what happened during the Boston Tea Party. -
First Continental Congress
Meeting of 12/13 delegates to discuss the new acts and taxes that had been placed on them. Issued the Declaration of Resolves -
“Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!”
Patrick Henry gives a speech to encourage the other colonists to fight for their freedom. -
The Shot Heard Around The World
Lexington and Concord was the first official battle of the Revolutionary War. (Hence why it is called the shot heard around the world) -
Second Continental Congress
Managed war effort, finances, and supplies. It consisted of the same delegates as the First Congress, and happened after the war was already starting. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
The first major battle of the American Revolution. Was fought during the siege of Boston, and resulted in a British Victory. -
Thomas Paine “Common Sense”
Thomas Paine wrote this pamphlet as an attempt to inspire colonists to fight for their independence. -
Virginia Declaration of Rights
A document created to claim the rights of men as an attempt to abolish an unfair government. This later led to several more documents, like the Declaration of Independence. -
Declaration of Independence Adopted
Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence after congress suggested getting their own independence. -
Articles of Confederation Ratified
The articles were written between 1776-1777. They were adopted on Nov. 15, 1777. But were not actually fully ratified until 1781. -
Treaty of Paris 1783
This treaty formally ended the Revolutionary War.
