The Sugar Act
The first law ever passed by Parliament for raising tax revenue in the colonies. Increased the price of foreign sugar imported from the West Indies. -
The Stamp Act
This mandated the use of stamped paper that certified the payment of tax. This angered colonists signifcantly as they claimed they had no representation in Parliament. -
The Quartering Act
Colonists were required to provide food and housing for British troops. This caused much anger among colonists. -
The Stamp Act Congress
FIrst meeting of 27 delegates from 9 colonies. They met to discuss protesting the Stamp Act. -
The Declaratory Act
THe Stamp Act is repealled and Parliament affirms its right to make whatever law, and the colonists had to follow. -
Townshend Acts
Passed to generate revenue to pay the salaries of government officals. Many items like like glass, white lead, paper, paint, and tea were taxed. -
Boston Massacre
Tragic event where 11 colonists were killed by British troops. This was caused by the taunting of many colonists towards the troops. -
Commities of Correspondence
These commites were started by Samuel Adams in order to spread the spirit of resistence towrds the British. -
Boston Tea Party
This was a politcal protest by the Sons of Liberty where they dressed as Indians and dumped 342 chests of tea off docked ships into the Atlantic Ocean. -
Intolerable Acts
These acts were meant to punish the Massachusetts colonists for what they did at the Boston Tea Party. -
The Association
This was an agreement between the colonies to completely boycott British goods. -
First Continental Congress
12 of the 13 colonies sent well-respected men to readress the colonies complaints towards the British rule. -
Lexington and Concord
British troops were sent to Lexington to seize stores of colonial gunpowder. This ended up with gunshots exchanged and 8 Americans dead and several injured. The troops then went to Concord where they had to retreat. -
Second Continental Congress
All 13 colonies sent representatives this time. They met to discuss the need to keep on fighting and hope that Parliament gives in to their grievancses. -
Bunker Hill
he Battle of Bunker Hill(was actually fought on nearby Breed's Hill) was won by the British, but gave the colonistis a major confidense boost for future battles. -
Olive Branch Petition
This professed American loyalty to the crown in order to prevent furture hostilities. -
Common Sense
This was a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine. Its purpose was to persuade people to join the revolution. -
Declaration of Independence
This was the fonding document of American politics. It announced that the 13 colonies were seperating from Great Britain.
