Election of Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln was elected the 16th president after a deeply divided Democratic Party. He was the first Republican to become president. -
Secession of Southern States
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. A while later many other southern states seceded too. Like, Alabama, Texas, and Louisiana. -
Civil War
The Civil War started after the southern states seceded from the Union after the election of Abraham Lincoln. The southern states started the Civil War. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation declared that all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states are, and henceforeward shall be free. -
13th amendment
The 13th amendment was passed in January of 1865. This amendment abolished slavery. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by southerner, John Wilkes Booth shortly after 10pm at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. -
Sharecropping
A system where a landowner allows a tenant to use the land in return for a share of the crops produced on their portion of land. -
Freedmen's Bureau
A U.S. federal government agency established in 1865 to aid freedmen. -
Radical Reconstruction
After northern voters rejected Johnson's policies Republicans in Congress took firm hold of reconstruction in the South. -
14th amendment
The 14th amendment was passed in July of 1868. This amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws. -
1st African American elected to Congress during Reconstruction
Hiram Rhodes Revels was seated as the first black member of the Senate. He was the first black member of the Congress overall. -
15th Amendment
Citizens right to vote should not be denied on account of race, color, etc. -
Civil Rights Act of 1875
A United States federal law to guarantee African Americans equal treatment in public. -
Reconsruction
The Civil War caused many damages to the South. After the Civil War the southerners were introduced a new set of significant challenges
