The problem
Noah wants to go to war but Mother does not want him to because she already lost her husband since he left them. -
Event 1
Cass saw people die in blue and grey coats in one of her visions. The horrible part was that it hadn't happened yet. -
Event 2
There was the first gathering of spring at Rodger's store. It was later interrupted by T.W. Jenkins bursting in warning of a Southern boat from New Orleans. Everyone goes out to the boat and two ladies come off, Delphine Duval and Calinda, who stay with the Pruitts. -
Event 3
Mama cooks a 'Christmas' breakfast for the guests. Delphine is dressed extremely pretty with shawls, gowns, styled hair, and a powdered face. Delphine talks a lot so that you think you heard it all, but she only tells what she wants you to know. Everyone had changed over night. -
Abraham Lincoln's Inauguration
On March 4, 1861 at 1:00p.m. Abraham Lincoln took his oath into office as the President of the United States. After his oath he presented his innaugural address to a nation in deep turmoil and tension, since seven southern states had pulled away from the union. Lincoln called for a compromise to preserve the union but not do so by force. This day Abraham Lincoln became America's 16th president. -
Event 4
Cass hadn't had any visions since Calinda came and she has actually been acting like a human being. However, during the night she had a vision and it was the first sign that things were heading in the wrong direction. -
Event 5
People in Grand Tower believe Calinda and Delphine to be spies for the the South. Mrs. T.W. Jenkins, Mrs. Cady, and Mrs. Breeze confronted Mrs. Pruitt about this but she blew them off and kicked them out of her house when they went too far. -
Attack of Fort Sumter
After Major Anderson did not surrender his Fort Sumter to General Beauregard on April 10, 1861 the Confederates started to bombard the fort on April 12. The fort was located in the Charleston Harbor and was evacuated on April 14, 1861 after Major Anderson surrendered the fort to the Confederates. -
Event 6
A showboat came from Iowa and so Delphine, Calinda, and the Pruitts are going. Delphine dresses everyone up and at the show Noah asks her to dance. Tilly is asked to dance by Dr. Hutchings and Calinda dances the calinda dance. -
Battle of Bull Run
Fought in Virginia, the Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle of the Civil War. The Confederate Army was under Brigadier Generals Beauregard and Johnston, while the Federal forces were run by Brigadier General McDowell. By the end of the battle the Federal army had retreated and the Confederates were in no position to follow them. The Federals had about 3,000 casualties and the Confederates about 2,000. -
Event 7
Noah and Tilly turn 16. -
Event 8
Noah goes off to war at night. He joins the Thirty-first Illinois Infantry Regiment and was based in Jacksonville at Camp Dunlap. -
Event 9
Noah had moved to Cairo. Mama had a horrible 'vision' and turned into a whole different person. She ordered Tilly to go down to Cairo and bring Noah back since she could spare Tilly but not Noah. -
Event 10
Tilly and Delphine headed down to Cairo where they met up with Dr. Hutchings who took them to the camp where Noah was. Noah wasn't the worst of the soldiers but he was bad; Tilly and Delphine start their work on recovering the wounded. They stay at Mrs. Hanrahan, a widow. -
Event 11
Tilly and Delphine have worked long days aiding the soldiers and now most of them are becoming healthier. Tilly is nervous for Noah though because she saw a book on war tactics on his bedside and she fears he will want to go back into war. -
Event 12
Mrs. Hanrahan comes to see Tilly and Delphine but knows in an instant that Delphine is an African American. -
Climax
Noah goes back into the war near Mississippi. -
Falling Action 1
Noah is sent back from the war because his arm was blown and had to be amputated. Tilly and Delphine fix him up and then they all travel back to Grand Tower. -
The Battle of Belmont
Once General Grant realized the Confederate army was deading towards Belmont, Missourri across the Mississippi River, he decided to meat them. By 9:00a.m. the battle had begun. Even though the Union did not gain much, they had won the battle and returned back to Cairo. -
Falling Action 2
Mama commited suicide when a coffin came up the river that belonged to their father and she thought it was Noah's. Cass later dies of diptheria. Calinda leaves for California. -
Resolution
Tilly and Dr. Hutchings marry. Noah and Delphine don't marry but are more married than most people; they have a child (Dr. Hutchings Jr.).
