On this day in 1453, at the age of 21, Mehmed II captured Constsantiniple in an effort to strengthen Ottoman's navy. In the ensuring battle, the final Byzantine empreor, Constantine XI died in the fight. -

Bayezid II accends the Ottoman Throne
On May 3rd of this year, Mehmed II died, which led to his eldest son, Bayezid to accend his throne. The circumstances of his death are unknown, but some such as historian Colin Heywood say "there is substantial circumstantial evidence that Mehmed was poisoned, possibly at the behest of his eldest son, and successor, Bayezid. -

Ottoman-Venetian War (1499-1503)
This was the Second Ottoman-Venetian between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice for control of the lands that were contested between the two parties in the Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea, and the Adriatic Sea. The battle lasted from 1499 to 1503, resulting in the Turks victory and forced the Venetians to recognize their gains in 1503. -
Greek War of Independence
This was a successful war of independence waged by Greek revolutionaries against the Ottoman Empire. By this time, most of Greece had come under the Ottoman rule. The war resulted in Greek victory, which resulted in the establishment of the First Hellenic Republci, the London Protocol, and Treaty of Constantinople. As a result, this revolution is also celebrated by the modern Greek state as a national day on 25 March.
