Rigoberta´s birth
Was born in a poor peasant family in the Quiche branch of the Mayan culture, at the Aldea Chimel in Guatemala. -
She joined to the Committee of the Peasant Union (CUC)
As well as her father she joined to the Comitte of the Peasant Union (CUC).
That year his brother was arrested, tortured and killed by the army. -
Torture and murderes of his close family
Some of the members of her family were tortured and murdered by the military police. Her father was burnt when he was still alive, inside the Spanish embassy where he was in a protestant act.
Her mother also died after having been arrested, tortured and raped. -
31st of January Popular Front
She joined to this radical group in which her contribution consisted of educating the Indian peasant population in resistance to massive military oppression. -
United Representation of the Guatemalan Opposition (RUOG)
She took part in the founding of the joint opposition body. -

She got married with his actual husband Ángel Francisco Canil -
Publishment of a biography
She told her life story to Elisabeth Burgos Debray.
The book, called in english "I, Rigoberta Menchú, An Indian Woman in Guatemala" was a gripping human document which attracted considerable international attention. It was translated into more than a dozen languages! -
Winner of the Nobel Peace Price

She took part in the farmaceutic industry called "Salud para Todos" with the propouse of providing generic medicines with a low cost. -
UNESCO and The Guiness World Records
During this year, she participated in two important events: The union to the UNESCO (The Uniated Nations) and the mention in The Guiness World Records as she was the youngest and the first Guatemalan native to recieve the nobel Peace Price. -
Guatemalan Elections
She was a presidential candidate in her native Guatemala. Gathering only about three percent of the vote (sixth place out of fourteen candidates) in the first round of elections, she couldn´t pass to the run-off, which then was won by Alvaro Colom.
