In 1998, Ericsson, Intel, Nokia, Toshiba and IBM came together to form the Bluetooth Special Interest Group. No single company owns the Bluetooth. Bluetooth has become an important part of our daily lives and is continuing to be as more and more people depend on the internet. -
AbioCor Artificial Heart
This was a very important invention to the medical world. The artificial heart was first used to replace a human heart in an operation in 2001. This is the first completely self-contained total artificial heart. It is a product of 30 years of research, development, and testing. It's design allows it to be totally implanted within the body. -
iPod
The iPod transformed the way people listened to music and opened the door to the iPhone. Portable MP3 players were around years before the iPod came out. However, these required people to carry around CDs and cassette players. The design of the iPod with Apple software made this desirable to customers. -
Mozilla Firefox
Firefox was the first browser to challenge Microsoft's internet explorer. Microsoft's Internet Explorer dominated at the time. Microsoft was free and open-source so it appealed to Windows users who did not want to be locked into Microsoft. However, now Google Chrome has taken over. -
Skype
Skype transformed the way people communicate with each other. It used to be pricey to talk to call friends and family abroad, but Skype made it free over WiFi. It was first only made for desktops, but now it is available on phones and tablets. Many people use it to talk to friends and colleagues. -
Facebook
Facebook was not the first social network. However, it quickly overtook competion due to it's simplicity. Today the website connects over 1.6 billion people worldwide, with users from different backgrounds, nationalities, and ages. People use Facebook to share moments from their life with their friends, family, and even fans. -
Spotify
Spotify is a music streaming service. It arrived at a time when music piracy was at it's height. With Spotify, users could choose to listen to music with advertisements and not in the order of their choice or they could pay a monthly subscription for ad-free music streaming. It now has 100 million active users with 30 million subscribers. -
Nissan Leaf
There are only around 30 mass production highway-capable electric passenger cars on the market today, but the environmental benefits continue to make them an attractive option for many people. The world's top selling highway-capable electric car is the Nissan Leaf with sales in over 35 countries. -
