    The Age of Revolution (Political Theme)

    Although during the time period of 1750-1914 the continuation of certain revolutions resulted, the change that certain revolutions created was far greater, as shown by the development of new nations, new revolutions after the concurrent revolutions replacement, and how the enforcement of different types of governments resulted.
  • Radical Phase of French Revolution

    During the time period of 1758-1794 Maximilien Robespierre was the leader of the radical phase of the French Revolution. Maximilien was a classic example of a revolutionary ideologue and he published enlightenment-style political tracts. This event relates to the political theme because Robespierre soon took over leadership of the government. This event goes along with continuity over time because he continued the developement of the French Revolution.
  • American Revolution

    The American Revolution took place during the date of 1765. During this revolution American colonies rejected the British monarchy and aristocracy, overthrew the authority of Great Britain, and founded the U.S.A. This event relates to the political theme because the revolution was a political upheaval between 1765-1783. This is also an event of change because the United States was newly formed.
  • French Revolution

    During 1789, the French Revolution began. During the French Revolution, the Bourbon monarchy was overthrown and so were old regimes. The French empire was also established during this time. This event relates to the political theme because it set forth the political restructuring of Western Europe. This event is an event of change because this revolution overthrew a monarchy and established a republic. This revolution also allowed Napoleon Bonaparte to soon come to power.
  • Storming of Bastille

    During the time of 1789, a popular riot stormed the Bastille. Bastille represented royal authority in the centre of Paris. The prison contained just seven inmates at the time of its storming but was a symbol of the abuse of the monarchy and its fall was the flashpoint of the French Revolution. This event relates to the political theme because this prison symbolized the abuse of the monarchy. This is an event of change because this storming led to the beginning of the French Revolution.
  • New Spirit of Nationalism

    During the time period of 1793-1794, a new spirit of popular Nationalism developed. Nationalism led to the replacement of older loyalties to church and locality. This event relates to the political theme because nationalism falls under the political category on the SPICE chart. This is an event of change because a new spirit of Nationalism developed.
  • Final Phase of French Revolution

    In 1799, during the final phase of the French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte soon became victorious. Napoleon was a leading general who soon converted the revolutionary empire to an authoritarian empire. Napoleon also built the French emipre that ruled over Europe before its fall. This event relates to the political theme because he implemented fundamental liberal policies in France. This is an event of change because the republic changed to an authoritarian empire.
  • Greek Revolution

    On the date of 1820, the Greek Revolution began. The Greek Revolution was a nationalist revolution against Ottoman rule and a rebellion in Spain. This event relates to the political theme because it relates to nationalism as it was a nationalist revolution. This is an event of change because it dismantled the Ottoman Empire.

    During the date of 1830, another French Revolution was established. This French Revolution was different than the first because of the placement of a different king and a somewhat more liberal monarchy. This event relates to the political theme because it correlates with leadership and the government. This is an event of continuity because the pervious French Revolution was basically being continued only that this time, the government somewhat differentiated.
  • Belgian Revolution

    During 1830, the Belgian Revolution was the conflict which led to the secession of the southern provinces from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and established an independent Kingdom of Belgium. This event relates to the political theme because it deals with the establishment of a kingdom. This is an event of change because this revolution created a newly independent kingdom.
  • Failure of Revolutions

    During the time of 1848, a substantial failure of revolutions drew the revolutionary era in Western Europe to a close. This failure resulted in many liberals and working class leaders to believe that revolution was too risky. This event relates to the political theme because the governement installed riot control police because of the uprising in 1848. This is an event of change because Western politics consolidated after the failure of the many revolutions.
