Revolutionary War timeline

  • French and English Enlightenment

    This was a time when new authors came about and began questioning their views on many thing, or even bringing our new views. Different ways to see nature, Religion, and even government. Some even wrote about the science of human nature.
  • John Locke

    He argued that people have "natural rights" these were life, liberty, and property. His view on the social contract was that people create the government that protects these rights, but in order for that to work the people have to follow the laws the government makes. He wrote "Second Treatise of Government"
  • Thomas Jefferson

    He served as a lawyer and a representative in the house of Burgesses during the revolutionary war. He supported the colony to be free from Great Britain. He was the one who drafted the Declaration of Independence. He was then elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, where he worked on the states constitution.
  • Lexington and Concord

    This battle actually started the American Revolutionary war. Tension had been building between colonists and British soldiers. The soldiers marched to concord but the colonists were warned by Paul Revere. Then the British were forced to retreat.
  • Second Continental Congress

    The delegates from the 13 colonies met to discuss the course of war. This was shortly after Britain and it's American colonies were fighting. Congress appointed Washington as the commander of the continental army. This congress also issued the declaration of Independence and Articles of confederation.
  • Bunker Hill

    This was a battle where the British actually defeated the Americans. This was actually fought on Breed's hill. The American fought hard but ran out of ammo quickly and were forced to retreat.
    Though they lost they had a confidence build for the colonists and they knew they could have a fair shot against the British.
  • Olive Branch Petition

    This was the colonists final attempt to avoid war with Britain. In this they stated their loyalty to the crown and their rights as British citizens. This was during the American revolution.
  • Declaration of Independence

    This was the document that officially cut the colonies off from Great Britain. The people said they have the right to form their own government and were not going to be under their control anymore.
  • Trenton

    Washington led his troops into Trenton. The Hessian force though was weak. they were unprepared and Washington moved in quickly and Rall's troops were forced to retreat. Rall was killed.
  • Princeton

    Cornwallis planned to attack right after the battle of Trenton while Washington's troops are still weak. Though Washington was smart and he waited then found a way out. But they had to fight to troops they ran into on the way out.
  • Saratoga

    This gave patriots a boost in confidence and persuaded the french, Spanish and dutch to join them for war.
    This included the battle of Quebec and The first battle of Sara toga. The battle of Quebec was a failed Canadian invasion. the German gained power over the British. the british suffered many casualties.
  • Valley Forge

    This was a 6 month camp for the troops. The conditions were cold. But this experienced made all of the troops stronger. They built many huts to house them all, as well as some women and children. This is where they say the Army was built,due to many coming out more confident and better trained.
  • France

    The treaty of alliance created a military alliance between the US and France. The treaty of amity and commerce established the commerce between the US and France.
  • Spain

    It wanted supremacy over Great Britain. It allied with France and the american colonies.
  • Cowpens

    Battle fought between Us forces and British Forces. The patriots won and proved they could outfight the British without any other factors. This was over a British force in south Carolina.
  • Yorktown

    Cornwallis surrendered to General Washington as French american troops trapped the British. The British surrendered. This ended the revolutionary war.
  • Treaty of paris

    This officially ended the revolutionary war. This was the peace treaty formally recognized the independence of america.
  • George Washington

    He served 2 terms as the U.S. president and he was the general of the continental army during the American Revolutionary War. He also was the first president of the new, independent America.
