Revolutionary War Timeline

  • French and English Enlightenment

    Enlightenment people in Britain, in France and throughout Europe questioned traditions in authority and embraced the fact that we could be improved through change. The Enlightenment period made lots of books, essays, inventions, scientific discoveries, laws, wars and revolutions. The American and French Revolutions were directly inspired by the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment Period was from 1685 to 1815.
  • George Washington

    He was Commander in Chief of the Continental Army from 1775 to 1783. He eventually led the Americans to defeat the British and claim victory, which made him a national hero, which made him the first president of America.
  • John Locke

    John Locke was a British philosopher and a political theorist. He had a big impact on the shaping of America and he redefined how a government should He said that the governments job is to protect the natural rights of the people, which Locke believed to be life, liberty, and property.
  • Thomas Jefferson

    In 1775 he became a Continental Congressmen. He also wrote the Declaration of Independence. And eventually became the 3rd US president.
  • Spain

    Spain fought against Britain because they wanted the land that Britain took from them. So they supported the Americans.
  • Lexington and Concord

    This was the spark that started the American revolution. The British went out from Boston to get rebel leaders, Samuel Adams and John Hancock in Lexington and to destroy the Americans
    weapons and ammunition in Concord. But the Americans won the battle
  • Second Continental Congress

    This would represent America´s first good shot at representative self-governance. The Second Continental Congress brought the colonies together for the revolution.
  • Bunker Hill

    The Battle of Bunker Hill was early in the American Revolution. The Americans were defeated by the British in this battle. Even though the Americans lost they still killed a lot of British Soldiers.
  • Olive Branch Petition

    This was the last shot for the colonist to not go to war with the British. In the document the colonist pledged their loyalty to the King and declared their rights as British people. But the King rejected it.
  • Declaration of Independence

    This is of the most important documents in American history. It was the paper that declared our freedom from British rule and it gave us the right to choose our own government.
  • Trenton

    The Battle of Trenton was led by George Washington and they won that battle against the British Hessian Forces.
  • Princeton

    In this battle The British lost control in the battle so they ran to New York. So after winning this battle and the battle of Trenton they started to believe they had a chance to win the War.
  • Saratoga

    This marked another turning point in the War because on October 17, 1777 the British and Hessian soldiers surrendered.
  • Valley Forge

    This was the turning point in the Revolutionary War for the Americans. And it sparked their victory in the war.It was from Dec. 19, 1777 to Jun. 19, 1778.
  • France

    The Treaty of Amity and Commerce saw that the United States is an independent nation and wanted trade between France and America. The Treaty of Alliance made a military alliance against Britain.
  • Cowpens

    The Battle of Cowpens was a crucial victory for the Americans in the War. It boosted the Americans morale. And caused casualties that the British could not replace.
  • Yorktown

    The Americans were led by George Washington and the British were led by General Lord Charles Cornwallis but General Lord Charles Cornwallis was forced to surrender to the Americans because they surrounded him. It happened from Sep. 28, 1781 to October 19, 1781.
  • Treaty of Paris 1783

    The Treaty of Paris was signed by the American and British Representatives in 1783, which ended the American Revolution.
