Treaty that ended French and Indian War. France gives up North American Colonies. Land east of Mississippi River goes to England. Spain gives Florida to England. -

Sugar Act
First law put on colonists to raise taxes. A tax on sugar and molasses going into the colonies. -

Quartering Act
Colony families were forced to provide food and housing for British soldiers. -
Stamp Act Congress
Representatives from nine colonies met and made a list of grievances and beseeched the King and Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act. -

Colonists rejoiced of repealing the Stamp Act. This act was a statement that the British Parliament could pass/enforce any act they saw fit. -

Boston Massacre
British soldiers opened fire on mob of colonists in Boston. -
Boston Tea Party
Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty disguised themselves as Indians and dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor from three British Ships. -
Intolerable (Coercive) Acts
Because of the Boston Tea Party, British passed this act. It put military force in Boston and closed the Boston Harbor until the tea was paid for. -
First Continental Congress
All thirteen colonies, except for Georgia, attended a meeting in Philadelphia to discuss a petition to King George III. It gave the king a chance to "right wrongs" with the colonists. -
Lexington and Concord
First battle of Revolutionary War. British were on their way to arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock in Concord and seize accumulated battle supplies, but met Colonials in Lexington. -
Second Continental Congress
Congress meeting in Philadelphia. They selected George Washington to lead the Continental Army. -
Bunker Hill
Colonists controlled Breed's Hill. 3,000 British attacked the colonists from the front by running up the hill. Colonists mowed them down, but ran out of ammo and ran. -
Olive Branch Petition
The last petition the colonies sent to the king asking to prevent further hostilities. Shot down by the king after the battle of bunker hill. -
Common Sense
Thomas Paine's pamphlet that influenced people living in the colonies at the time to fight for independence. He made it sound like you were not using your common sense if you don't fight back. -
Idea of Independence
Richard Henry Lee of Virginia moved that "these united colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states." -

Washington recrossed the Delaware River and captured 1000 Hessians. A week later, Washington defeated a small British force at Princeton. These battles revealed Washington's military best. -

Cornwallis had blundered into a trap. After Virginia, he fell back to Chesapeake Bay, while waiting for supplies and more troops. Washington, with help from the French, beset British on the land. Cornwallis surrendered his 7000 men. -
