British General Gage sent out soldiers to capture colonial supplies in Concord. Militia stopped the soldiers in Lexington, where the "Shot Heard Round the World" happened, starting the war. -

Massachusetts congress orders 13,600 colonial volunteers from all over New England to go to Boston, and make camps around the city. -
Capture of Fort Ticonderoga
American soldiers led by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold capture Fort Ticonderoga, New York. They stole the much needed military supplies and took them back to Boston. -
Second Continental Congress
In Philadelphia the Continental Congress meets for a second time and votes John Hancock as the president, five days later the Congress places the colonies in a "state of defense". -
Battle of Bunker Hill
American troops went to Breed's Hill and dug trenches, Americans shot at the British troops, who were marching up the hill. The British marched up three times, and on the third time they got to the top of the hill, and the Americans retreated. -

George Washington takes command of the Continental Army of 17,000 men at Cambridge, Massachusetts. -

Thomas Jefferson and the Continental Congress finish revising the Declaration of Independence and send it to the printer. -
Battle of Long Island
General Howe leads 15,000 soldiers against Washington and his army, two to one. America is defeated. -
Execution of Nathan Hale
British troops catch Nathan Hale spying on them on Long Island, and he is executed without trial, and his last words were, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." -
Washington Crosses the Delaware (battle)
General Washington and his men cross the Delaware River on Christmas night and march to Trenton, where they attack and defeat Hessian troops. -
The American Flag
The flag of the United STates consits of 13 stars and 13 red and white stripes. It is mandated by Congress. -
Battles of Saratoga
General Burgoyne attempted to reach Albany, New York, where rebels had the head of their navagation plan. Part of his troops ran into General Gates' army and the British were stuck. By October 7th, the supplies were running low, so Burgoyne and his men retreated to Saratoga, where Gates' army followed and surrounded them. -
United States and France sign the French Alliance
The treaty said that the United States would have a defensive alliance to aid France if England attacked, and that France and the United States would not make peace with England until the United States was independant. -
Peace Commision Turned Down By Congress
British Parliament created a Peace Commission for the Americans, offering all of the demands except independence. Congress rejects it. -

General Washington is threatened with mutiny at his camp after a bad winter in Morristown, New Jersey. -
General Cornwallis Invades North Carolina
Americans are defeated at Fishing Creek, South Carolina, and Cornwallis invades North Carolina. -
A Week of Mutiny Among American Troops
At Pompton, New Jersey mutiny is among the troops, and is put down seven das later when Washington sends 600 soldiers to stop the rebellion. The two leaders were hanged. -
Articles of Confederation adopted
An agreement of the thirteen states that established that the United States of America was a confederation of sovereign states and it was their first constitution. -
Battle at Yorktown
Washington attacks at Yorktown when he recieves a letter from a French Admiral who's 29 ships and 3,000 soldiers head for the Chesapeake Bay, near where Cornwallis is. -
Surrender of the Battle at Yorktown
Washington took Yorktown, and the British sent out a flag of truce. Washington and Cornwallis worked out terms of surrender. -
