Revolutionary War Timeline

  • Treaty of Paris- 1763

    The treaty formally ended the French and Indian War, as well as marked the beginning of Bristish rule outside of Europe.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    The proclamation forbade Colonial American settlers to live past a line draw on the Appalachian Mountains. The western side of the line belonged to Natives, and the Eastern side belonged to the British.
  • Stamp Act

    A direct tax was placed on any press that was published, making it be printed on stamped paper produced in London. The tax had to be paid in British currency, not the colonies' paper money. This angered the colonists, and was a key point in the beginning of the Revolutionary War.
  • Quatering Act

    British Parliament made the colonists house British soldiers, the purpose of the act being for the British to "take back hold of the colonies."
  • Abigail Adams

    Abigail Adams
    Abigail Adams was the second First Lady, preceded by Martha Washignton. Married to John Adams, she is known for the letters of advice she sent to her husband while he was in Philidelphia.
  • Townshend Acts

    The purpose of the five acts known as the "Townshend Acts" (Revenue Act of 1767, Indemnity Act, Comission of Customs Act, Vice Admirality Court Act, and the New York Restraining Act) was to raise revenue in the colonies. To do so, colonists paid a salary to governers and judges so they would be independent of colonial rule.
  • Boston Massacre

    The killing of 5 colonists in March of 1770, it was the result of the tensions in the colonies since british soldiers had come to Massachusattes.
  • John Adams

    John Adams
    A signer of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams was a lawyer from Massachusetts who supported the Revolution. He was associated with the Boston Massacre, Treaty of Paris (1783), and the Declaration of Independence.
  • Thomas Jefferson

    Thomas Jefferson is considered one of the "Founding Fathers" of the U.S. He was elected governer of Virginia and minister of France.
  • Boston Tea Party

    A nonviolent political protest, colonists disguised as Indians ruined an entire supply of tea from the East India Company in protest of the Tea Act. which placed a tax on tea.
  • Sons of Liberty

    Sons of Liberty
    A group formed to protect the rights of colonists. Thay are best known for dumping tea into Boston Harbor (The Boston Tea Party)

    The 1st Continental Congress was a meeting of deligates from teh 13 colonies (excluding Georgia) to converese on how to begin winning the Revolutionary War.

    American Colonists who sided with Great Britian, who killed many Americans who wanted freedom.
  • Sam Adams

    Sam Adams
    One of the founders of the Sons of Liberty, Sam Adams was against British rule. He was one of the first people, along with John Hancock, to be told of the advancing British forces by Paul Revere.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Who fired the first shot is unclear, but the Battle of Lexington's first shot was known as "the shot heard around the world." Lexington and Copncord were important to the Revolutionary War because they were the first military battles of the Revolutionary War.
  • Paul Revere

    Paul Revere
    Claim to Faim: Alerting the Colonial malitia of the oncoming British forces in the Battle of Lexington.
  • Benedict Arnold

    Benedict Arnold
    Arnold was a general who originally fought for the Colonial malitia, but then defected to the British Army. He is most known for his acts of bravery in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, Battle of Ridgefield, and the Siege of Fort Stanwix.
  • Thomas Paine/Common Sense

    Thomas Paine/Common Sense
    Thomas Paine was an author from England who published Common Sense, a pamphlet telling colonists that the time had come to break free of British Rule.
  • Signing of the Declaration of Independence

    The signing of the declaration was important in the revolutionary war because it recognized the 13 colonies as indepentdent states free from British rule.
  • Patriots

    Patriots
    Colonists that violently protested against British rule, the Patriots claimed thier freedom in July of 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was created.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Generally considered the "turning points of the war," two battles were fought in the same place, only 18 days apart form each other.
  • Hessians

    Hessians
    About 30,000 of these German soldiers fought for Great Britian during the Revolution. They gave extensive power to the British force. Hessians were known for taking captives in the Revolutionary War.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    The second battle decided the fate of the British army, when the Americans won the battle and the British surrendered.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    A victory over Great Britain by the French and American armies, the Battle of Yorktown was the last major land battle of the Revolutionary War.
  • Lord Cornwallis

    Lord Cornwallis
    Lord Cornwallis was a leading British general in the Rev. War. When he surrendered to the Colonial Malitia in 1781, it ended significant hostile in the colonies.

    The treaty that ended the Revolutionary War, the treaty gave the United States a generous amount of newfound land and acknowledged the United States to be independent states.

    Washington was the commander of the Continental Army during the Rev. War, and the United States' first president.

    Martha Custis Washington
    Martha Washington, married to George Washington, was the First Lady of the U.S. She was previously married, and her ex-husband served as an aid to George Washington during the Siege of Yorktown.
