Battle of Lexington & Concord
Lexington and Concord were towns in Massachusetts that were the sites of the first battle in the American Revolution. April 19, 1775, regiments of British soldiers settled in Boston. Their destinations were Lexington where they would capture Colonial leaders Sam Adams and John Hancock, then Concord, where they would seize gunpowder. In the end Britain suffered extensive loss, while Americans considered this as a motivator to keep going. -
Siege of Ft. Ticonderoga
Fort Ticonderoga was located on the western side of Lake Champlain in New York. It was an important location because it access to both Canada and the Hudson River Valley .On May 10, 1775, Benedict Arnold of Massachusetts joined Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys of Vermont in a dawn attack on the fort, surprising and capturing the sleeping British garrison. Battle of Fort Ticonderoga was the first American victory! -
Battle of Bunker Hill
Bunker Hill is the name of a battle fought near Boston, Massachusetts, on June 17th, 1775 between the Americans, led by Colonels Putnam and Prescott, and the British led by Generals Howe and Clinton.The battle actually took place on Breed's Hill, not Bunker Hill. The Americans had occupied Breed's Hill in Charlestown on June 16, 1775, in order to protect the shipyard of nearby Boston. The next day, the British attacked. WIth this done the British defeated the Americans. -
Battle of Quebec
While General Washington with the Continental Army were blockading Boston, Colonel Benedict Arnold and General Richard Montgomery made an attempt to capture the city of Quebec from the British.The Americans aimed to win support for the American cause in Canada. The attack failed, and the effort cost Montgomery his life. The Battle of Quebec was a defeat for the Americans. -
Battle of Long Island
Washington recognized that New York was a focal point, so he marched his troops from Boston to New York. He positioned his troops on the western end of Long Island in anticipation of the British arrival. On August 27, 1776 the British Army moved against the American army led by George Washington. The purpose of the battle was to seize control of New York and thereby isolate New England from the rest of the colonies.It ended in a defeat for Washington, and the British drove Americans out of NY. -
Battle of Ft.Washington
Fort Washington was located at the northern point of New York City, overlooking the Hudson River.On Nov. 16, Hessian Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Knyphausen and a force of Redcoats were against George Washington's Continental Army who were laying siege to Fort Washington at the northern end and highest point of Manhattan Island. The significance of the fort was that the fort would control the high ground overlooking the river with Fort Lee.The Americans were forced out, British gained victory. -
Battle of Trenton
The Battle of Trenton took placed in Trenton, New Jersey on the Delaware River. A battle between the Americans against Hessians and British troops(General George Washington vs. Colonel Rahl).The Hesssians began the battle by shooting the American troops. The American forces had only a handful of wounded, while the Hessians lost about 106 dead and wounded. Colonel Rall was mortally wounded and died the same day. On the other hand Washington recrossed DE back to PA, and gained another battle. -
Batle of Princeton
The Battle of Princeton was fought in Princeton, New Jersey between the Americans against the British. The Americans where under George Washington and the British unde Major General Lord Cornwallis. Rallied by Washington and joined by new arrivals, the continental patriots drove the British from the field and village. British losses were between four hundred and six hundred killed, wounded, or captured. Cornwallis, outmaneuvered, withdrew his entire army. -
Battle of Brandywine
The Battle of Brandywine was located in Pennsylvania, west of Philadelphia.British and Hessian troops against the American Continental Army.Major General Sir William Howe were against General George Washington.There was alot of confusion going on with this battle that caused Washington to be outmaneuvered by the British. At the end he had his army take high ground arond Birmingham Friends Meeting House. Unfortunately, the Americans were unable to defend their positions. British and Hessians won. -
Battle of Saratoga
Battle of Saratoga took place in Saratoga on the Hudson River in New York State. A battle between British and German troops against the Americans.Major General John Burgoyne commanded the British and German force. Major General Horatio Gates and Brigadier Benedict Arnold commanded the American army. In the Battle of Saratoga British General John Burgoyne eneded up surrendering.Turning point for French to allied with the Americans.A decisive victory the Americans. -
Battle of Charleston
The Battle of Charleston took place in Charleston, South Carolina. A battle in which the British troops conquered Charleston, and the patriots lost their most important port city. Place where Major General Benjamin Lincoln surrender to British Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton. This battle was one of the worst losses for the patriots. -
Battle of Kng's Mountain
The Battle of King's Mountain took place in South Carolina.Tory or loyalist Americans against Whig or patriot American Revolutionaries.General Patrick Ferguson commanded the loyalists. The American force had a number of officers.The Battle of King's Mountain marked the turning point in revolutionary military fortunes convincing the loyalists to remove themselves from the conflict and setting the stage for British surrender in Yorktown. -
Battle of Cowpens
The Battle of Cowpens took place in South Carolina on the border with North Carolina. Americans against the British and loyalist Americans. Colonel Daniel Morgan against Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton. It ended up being a small battle,and proved that British achieved little in the long run. The American victory at Cowpens began the direct chain of events that lead to independence at Yorktown. -
Battle of Yorktown
Yorktown was the last major battle of the American Revolution.George Washington found that the French Admiral de Grasse was sailing to Virginia to prevent the British army under the command of General Cornwallis from leaving Yorktown. He and the French General Rochambeau rushed their troops to Yorktown to trap the British and prevent them from escaping over land. Soon the Americans and French had Cornwallis closed in, and in Oct. 19,1781 Cornwallis surrendered. Victory came to the Americans!
