Battle of Lexington & Concord
A detachment of troops were sent by the British commander in Boston to nearby Lexington and Concord. They were to take control of the colonial gunpowder, and also capture the rebel leaders, Samuel Adams and John Hancock. At Lexington eight Americans were killed and more were wounded. This war kicked off the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). In this battle the British had won. -

Siege of Fort Ticonderoga
Benedict Arnold of Massachusetts joined Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys of Vermont to attack the fort, located on Lake Champlain in northeast New York. They surprised and captured the sleeping British garrison. This was the first American victory of the Revolutionary War. -

General Sir William Howe and General Charles Cornwallis launch a full-scale British attack on General George Washington and the Patriot outpost, near Chadds Ford, in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Surprised and outnumbered by the 18,000 British troops to his 11,000 Continentals, Washington ordered his men to abandon their posts and retreat. Defeated, the Continental Army marched north and camped at Germantown, Pennsylvania. -
