Common Sense
Common Sense was written by Thomas Pain in January 10, 1776. The 50-page pamphlet said that King George III was a 'royal brute". Paine ridiculed the idea of rule by the kings. He said that " the Americans would be better off if theyif the y would govern themselves. And that they didn't need Britan to goven them." -
Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was signed in July 4th , 1776.
The Declaration of Inependence was written by Thomas Jefferson and reviewed by John Adams and Benjain Franklin. The Declaration talks about the Natural Rights and how society and the government sould work. Then it talks about the Lists of Grievances. -
The Crossing of the Delaware
On a cold Christmas night on 1776, General George Washington lead 2,400 men across the cold Delaware River. The soliders huddled in the small boats. They were very poorly supplied some didn't eaven have any shoes. To keep the soilders feet from freezing they put ragges on their feet. Washington urged his men to keep going. By December 26 they attacked Trenton and caught German mercenaries by surprise. -
Valley Forge
During the winter of 1777-1778 Washington's Continental army had suffered a lot. In 1777 a camp was hastily built some 22 miles away from Philadelphia. The 11,000 continental soildies that were there were not sufficiently fed and clothed or housed. Many lacked clothes. At anytime 1out of 4 soldiers were sick or worse. When the Americans learned about the conditions of the continental army they collected food, medicine, warn clothes, and ammmunition. Then women went to the camp to help the soldie -
The War at Sea
Continental congress made a navy in 1775, but the navy was small.
In 1779 one of the most famouse naval battle took place of the coast of England. An American ship Bonhomme Richard and the Bristish ship Serapis fought side to side. Cannon and musket fire riped both sails. Though John Paul Jones' ship was in tatters he said " I have not yet began to fight." Then the Americans won the battle. -
Final Battle
Weakened by battles like Cowpens, Cornwallis headed for Virginia. Then Cornwallis made a big mistake of going to the Yorktown penensula. The French fleet drove the British fleet out. Then Washington and French forces came by land. After three weaks Cornwallis had no other option than surrender. On October 19 1781, the Americans and the French lined up in 2 facing colums. Then the British marched glumly between the 2 and tossed their weapons on the ground. Yorktown was the last major battle.
