    This proved they could hold their own against the British Army.

    This was a colony attack on the British, and in the end, the Patriots lost.

  • Common Sense Published

    Thomas Paine wrote this arguing for a republican form of government in America. This boosted and supported the idea of independence.

  • Adoption of the Declaration of Independence

    At this time, the colonies cut ties with British government completely, and had their own, thus showing their desire for independence.

  • Battle of Trenton

    This small battle happened in Trenton, New Jersey. This was a win for the patriots and boosted their morale.

  • Paoli Massacre

    This battle started the 22nd of September, making it last a whole day. 53 Americans died in the British surprise attack.

  • Battle of Saratoga

    This battle began on September 19th, 1777. The Americans defeated the superior British Army and gained the support of native allies.

  • Washington’s Encampment at Valley Forge

    This encampment lasted until June 19th, 1778. These winters were extremely hard as there was a shortage on a lot of items such as foods and clothings.
