Addition of Freed African Soldiers
Freed African people fought in both Concord and Lexington, and Bunker Hill. More kept coming to the army, but Washington put a stop to it because he did not want it to become a safe haven for them. -
Concord and Lexington
This war was the first official victory of the colonists. The British came to Concord and the colonists forced them to retreat by surprising them. -
Bunker Hill(Breeds Hill)
The colonists decided to fortify 2 hills overlooking Boston. 2000 Redcoats went up the hill, and the militia men were ordered not to fire until they could see the whites of their eyes because the colonists had very little gunpowder. The colonists pushed the Redcoats down the hill twice but did not have enough powder to win. A war had begun. -
Boston
The colonists surrounded the city, forcing British to abandon the battle. 9000 British soldiers were shipped out, along with 1100 loyalists. -
New York
Both the British and Continental armies met in New York City to fight for control of the city. From New Yrk they would be able to control supply routes. The colonists were no match for the British, and had to retreat after only 2 days, with 371 deaths for the British and 1407 deaths for the Continental army. -
Trenton
Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware on Christmas and surprised the Hessian's, who were celebrating Christmas. The Hessian's surrendered immediately, without losing a single man, and 868 were captured. -
Princeton
The colonists and the British fought at Princeton, and the colonists won. 300 British troops were taken prisoner. -
Saratoga
After struggling through the wilderness in New York, Burgoyne's army found themselves surrounded by militia. -
Period: to
Valley Forge
The colonists decided to stay at Valley Forge, and they barley survived a brutal winter there. They were low on food, clothing, fuel, etc. Many soldiers died from disease and starvation. -
Foreign Officers Arrive (Prussia and France)
A Prussian officer Friedrich Von Steuben came to Valley Forge to train the Continental Army. They went from rag tag to disciplined. -
Monmouth
The British left Philadelphia, and the Patriots chased them all the way to Monmouth, New Jersey. The Battle of Monmouth took place here. -
Clinton takes the Carolinas and Georgia
The British changed their strategy by looking to the South for loyalists, were Sir Henry Clinton started the "southern campaign" by taking over Savannah, Georgia. He pushed through the Carolina's, and left Lord Cornwallis in charge, where he quickly learned he did not have control of the Carolina's at all. -
Yorktown
8,000 French men and warships came to aid Washington, and he used them by sneaking into to Virginia in August and sealed of the Yorktown harbor so the British could not escape. The trap sprang into action and the Patriots and the British then battled it out in the town. -
End of the Fighting
The end of the fighting impacted many things. One was fear of the treaty being broken, because of how badly the Patriots had treated the Loyalists, so 80,00 of them fled to where the British still held Canada. Another one was that the Revolution influenced both the French and South America that people could overthrow their oppressors. -
Treaty of Paris
Representatives from American and England came to France to outline a treaty. This treaty had 3 parts. 1, England had to recognize America as a country, 2, England gave up all land claims South of Canada and east of the Mississippi, and 3, the US would return all land and property taken by the Loyalists taken during the war.
