    This meeting met in Philadelphia. This congress had 56 colonial delegates and these delegates debated the best way to respond to the crisis in Boston.

    Fewer than 70 minutemen gathered at the Lexington village green, near Concord where they met a large force of British troops. Suddenly, a shot ran out known as, " the shot heard round the world." This was the beginning of the American Revolution.

    Colonist targeted Fort Ticonderoga in Northern, New York after the second continental congress meeting. This fort guarded Lake Champlain which was a key waterway. Colonist surprised the British with a surprise attack where they quickly took the fort and its supply of weapons, including cannons.

    This battle taking place at Bunker Hill showed that the colonist could hold their own against the British. The British suffered more than 1,000 casualities, compared to about 400 for the colonist.

    Colonist planned an attack against the Hessian at Trenton, New Jersey. Washington believed that he could take them by surprise while they were celebrating for the holiday. Washington and 2,400 soldiers crossed the icy Delaware River ready for war which lasted less than an hour.

    The Battle of Brandywine Creek
    General Howe came up with the decision to attack Philadephia before marching to Albany. Washington tried to stop Howe when they both met up at Brandywine Creek. Howes' force ended up winning the battle.

    Burgoyne was suffered with a major defeat. Benedict Arnold then led a charge that forced British forces to retreat. Burgoyne soon found himself surrounded where he surrendered to General Gates and the patriots captured his whole army.

    The continental army was becoming very low on supplies when the Patriots were entering a war with France and Spain. Patriots became low on food and clothing where more then 1/5 of the soldiers died of disease and malnutrition. By the end of the winter, veteran Prussian army officer came to Washington's aid to help the Continental Army become a well-trained army.

    Battle of Vincennes
    The town of Vincennes on the Wabash River surrendered to the Patriots. Clark organized a meeting with American Indian leaders to persuade them to be temporarily be neutral to war. During this period the British recaptured Vincennes where Clark's forces returned and took back town. Clark was never able to captured for Detrot but his efforts weakened the Birtish Army.

    The Patriots steadily wore down the British. The British Navy tried to rescue Cornwallis's Army but the French drove them away. Washington prepared for a attack on weakened British Army. Fearing for a defeat, Cornwallis surrenders. British prime minister, recieved word of Yorktown and declared, "It's all over."

    In 1781, a commitee from the continental congress began peace negotiations with the British. The delegates took more than 2 years to a peace treaty with Paris. This treaty set new nation's borders that the Great Lakes bounded the north and the Mississippi River bounded the western border.
