  • Texas Declares Independence

At the Convention of 1836, 59 delegates drafted the Texas Declaration of Independence- declaring its independence from Mexican rule- and the Texas Constitution- which outlined their plan for this new Republic.
  • Battle of the Alamo

Mexican forces led by Santa Anna attacked the Texas rebels within the Alamo. Led by William Travis, James Bowie, and David Crockett, the American forces put up a valiant fight, but in the end they were all killed in the battle or executed after. However, the battle cry "Remember the Alamo!" served as a motivation for following fighters.
  • Battle of Coleto

While Colonel James Fannin had been ordered to abandon his position in Goliad and join General Houston's forces, he and his forces chose to stay. They fought the Mexican forces, but faced the same fate as the Alamo. Both this battle and the Alamo served as motivating battle cries of remembrance for the Battle of San Jacinto.
  • Battle of San Jacinto

General Houston and his militia, while outnumbered and facing impossible odds, attacked Mexican troops along the San Jacinto River. Against all odds, the Texans found victory and finally earned Texas independence.
  • The Republic of Texas

Citizens of the newly established Republic of Texas elected Sam Houston as their first president, Mirabeau Lamar as their first vice president, and Stephen Austin as their first Secretary of State. Thus, the government of the Republic of Texas began.
  • Austin Established as Texas Capitol

Under Mirabeau Lamar- the second president of Texas- the capitol was relocated to the village of Waterloo, and renamed to Austin in honor of Stephen Austin.
  • Texas Adopts Lone Star Flag

The Lone Star flag- still the official state flag of Texas- was adopted as the official flag of the Republic of Texas.
  • Texas Becomes an American State

On December 29, 1845, Texas officially became the twenty-eighth state. However, formal transfer of government did not happen until February 19, 1846.
