  • Independence or restoring

    late 1835-January 1836
    Civilian government deteriorated into near anarchy. Governor Smith and the General Council disagreed over issues such as whether to create a regular army and what they were trying to accomplish-was independence or restoring the constitution of 1824. Smith ended up being removed from office after suspending the council.
  • The beginning of the Texas Revolution

    At the beginning of February 1836, the Mexican army who was led by Jose Urrea left Matamoros to sweep into Texas along the Gulf Coast.
  • Constitution for the Republic of Texas

    March 17 1836 the convention where Sam Houston was the commander in chief of the entire army, wrote a constitution for the Republic of Texas. Modeled on the Constitution of the United States, it included a Declaration of Rights and restricted the power of the government.
  • Battle of San Jacinto

    April 21, 1836, Sam Houston attacked the Mexican Army and Texas won.
  • End of the Battle of San Jacinto

    The government took the Mexican Commander to Velasco and offered him freedom in return for his signature on two treaties, a public and private one. The public Treaty of Velasco was signed and it brought an end to the war. The private treaty stated that the government of Mexico would accept the public treaty.
  • Southwestern Boundary

    Sam Houston urged Congress to pass an act establishing the boundaries of Texas. In December the Congress responded by establishing the southwestern boundary to be the Rio Grande.
  • Annexation

    Memucan Hunt formally proposed the annexation of Texas to the administration of Martin Van Buren. Which was rejected for fear it would involve the United States' war with Mexico.
  • The second president

    Mirabeau B. Lamar took office as the second president of the Republic of Texas
  • Santa Fe

    The Santa Fe expedition left Austin under the command of General Hugh McLeod.
  • San Antonio capture

    A Mexican army under the control of General Adrian Woll swept into Texas and captured San Antonio.
  • Texas Annexation

    President Tyler appointed John C. Calhoun to bring Texas into the Union. A treaty of Annexation was signed and it stated that Texas would be protected from a Mexico attack.
  • Texas Admission Act

    The United States Congress accepted the state constitution in December and President James K. Polk signed the Texas Admission Act.
