  • Sam Houston as First President of the Republic of Texas

    Elected September 5th, 1836 and inaugurated on this day. Mirabeau B. Lamar served as his Vice President.

  • Death of Stephen F. Austin

    Stephen F. Austin, "Father of Texas" and Secretary of State, passes two months into his term.

  • Houston as the Capitol of the Republic

    Decided by vote of Congress November 30, 1836. The new Capitol is named after Sam Houston.

  • Mirabeau B. Lamar as Second President of the Republic

    Inaugurated on this date, Sam Houston delivered a three-hour farewell address dressed as George Washington.

  • Texas Capitol Moved to Austin

    Approved on this date, President Mirabeau B. Lamar and his cabinet arrive in Austin October 17, 1839.

    The Senate passes the resolution of the annexation on this date, and the House of Representatives passes the resolution the following day.

    On this day, Texas is made the 28th State of the Union. James Pinckney Henderson is sworn in as Governer shortly after on February 19, 1846.
