Royal Proclamation of 1763
This forbade settlers from settling past a line drawn along the Applachian Mountains. This was made by King George III. -
Stamp Act of 1765
This act required a stamp on about 50 trade items in the colonies. This was used to pay Britain back for troops that were sent there to defend the colonies. -
Townshend Taxes and the Boston Massacre
The Townshend Taxes were taxes put on specific items like paint, lead, paper and also shipping of items. These taxes lead to the Boston Massacre in 1770 because it had made the colonists very angry with Britain because of the taxation without representation. -
The Boston Tea Party
The tea company had a surplus of 17 million pounds of tea in Britain. They imported tea that was cheaper than the smuggles Dutch tea that colonist were drinking. Parliament was trying to pay off and keep satisfied colonist with cheat tea prices. So, Around 150 men from Boston dressed like indians and invaded 3 E.I.T.C. ships docked in Boston Harbor. The people dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor. -
The Intolerable Acts
The colonies were pressed with taxation without representation. Taxes were on almost everything but were mainly on tea. Led to the Boston Tea Party. -
The First Continental Congress
A gathering of John Adams, Peyton Randolph, George Washington, Charles Thomson, Joseph Galloway, and 56 delegates about the British tyranny that each colony had faced. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
This is where the "Shot heard 'round the world" had happened because no one knows who actually shot the first shot of this war. The British were seizing weapons at Concord. -
Second Continental Congress
They made a continental army and George Washington lead it. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
The bloodiest battle of the war, over 1,000 British and 400 Colonists died. -
Thomas Paine's Common Sense
This was written for the common people. It was the first document that asked for independence from Britain. -
Declaration of Independence
Thomas Jefferson was the main person who wrote it. The declaration stated that we declared freedom from Britain. -
Battles of Saratoga
There were two battles. One in Freeman's Farm and one in Bemis Heights. They considered these wars as a turning point and gave the French confidence in America. -
Treaty of Paris
Britain ceded all land West of the Appalachians to the Mississippi, and British Prime Minister Lord North Resigned. -
Battle at Yorktown
This is when the French came to help the colonists. They helped by having their Navy blocking the British from supplies and reinforcement. This also led to negotiations on how to end the war.
