Period: to
Books I and II
-
Marianne miscarries her first child
-
Letter writing
Between early December and let's just say December 15 the ladies are writing letters -
Evangelyn meets Mr. Morris
at the Dewbury ball -
Benedict and Marianne arrive at Revell Grange
-
Gibson Family arrives at Revell Grange
-
Nicholas arrives
Christmas Day! -
Nicholas mentions HW to Sam Owens
-
Robert proposes to Eve
-
Morris asks Eve to marry him
-
Many partings
Morris leaves for London. If we go with Maddie's idea, I imagine Benedict and Marianne and Nicholas will be leaving around this time too. Also, perhaps Eve will give Robert some clear idea that she must refuse him, so he leaves with Mrs. Gibson for Shropshire?? That means all who stay are Edmund, Hugh, Mabel, Eve, Amelia, Mr. & Mrs. Lewis. -
Benedict is gravely injured
I know this will change, and may even occur later in January, what with postal service running letters from northwest England to mid-east, packing/traveling coach, etc. -
Benedict is transported back to Revell Grange
Let's see: Eve's weak constitution overtaking her, Mabel softening Nicholas' heart with her attentiveness to Ben/Marianne/Eve, Amelia needing to "grow up", Edmund caring for her (a bit?), general shock and confusion among parents. -
Enter WK
meanwhile, Benedict has been ill with little improvement (any worsening?) for 10 days. -
Hugh/Edmund leave for London
Edmund to lend his legal service to the Lewis's, and to obtain property records, Hugh to find them a rental in town. Does Mabel go too?? Resume letter-writing? Does Edmund write to Mr. Lewis, and later Amelia??? -
WK dispatched END OF BOOK I
After Amelia suffers another choice: to refuse WK, Edmund finds a way to clear Lewis property battle, all are grateful. OR WK is dispatched via DUEL!? -
Morris invites Lewis's to London
FINALLY he writes a letter, inviting Lewis family (including Ben/Marianne) to London. All see the change as welcome, but Mr. F. Lewis writes back to say they cannot come for another week, because Benedict is still not well enough to be moved...tho he's recovering well by now. -
Leaving the Grange (alternate end of Book I)
Ben, Marianne, Nicholas, Mabel, Amelia, and Eve (maybe Hugh and/or Edmund have returned from London when WK dispatched and accompany them??) set off for Peaks on the way to London. Amelia sent via post to Leeds, back to school. (btw, Leeds school for young ladies is NOT on the way from Sheffield to London via Peaks, it's actually the opposite direction, so all shall have to say farewell to Amelia at the Grange.) -
Arrival at Morris London home
party spends 10 days at leisure traveling from Sheffield to London and exploring Peaks. If they were riding carriages non-stop it would be about 3-days' travel. (The stagecoach averaged about 60 miles per day, and it's 183 miles from Sheffield to Oxford Street in London) -
Enter HW (see description)
surprise meeting at a London ball. Mayhem ensues. Nicholas on edge, Mabel unhappy, Eve unwilling to divulge happiness while Mabel depressed, Morris follows Eve's desire, Marianne taken ill (while everyone thinks it's because of the stress of the last month, including Nicholas's hidden relation with HW, she is actually experiencing morning sickness...) -
Nicholas wins approval
SOMEHOW Nicholas wins back everyone's approval and earns Mabel's affection. Hugh allows Nicholas to court Mabel. -
Morris FINALLY announces engagement
-
Ben & Marianne announce they are expecting
(I sort of hypothetically thought Marianne would've conceived on February 10, during the Peaks' holiday and therefore would be about 4 months along -
Mabel agrees to marry Nicholas
-
Eve becomes Mrs. William Morris
-
Final Chapter
I imagine this chapter to be a bit more cursory: no dialogue, no action, just description of other happy endings.
Marianne gives birth to twins.
Edmund informs Eve he has become attached to Amelia, and hopes soon after to call her (Eve) his sister. Mabel marries Nicholas. Does he take her off to Thistlefield?? Does Benedict decide to sell Thistlefield and buy Nicholas a different property? And what of poor Robert and bachelor Hugh?? Mrs. Gibson placated now that Edmund is marrying Amelia.
