Benito Juarez presidency
Juarez first became president of the
Republic in 1858 and for the next
14 years he was the main national
leader. His efforts to promote liberal
reforms and to defend the
sovereignty of the nation at all
costs, made him one of the most
important figures in the history of
Mexico. -
The defeat of the Empire
In July 1867, in the capital of Mexico
Juarez was received triumphant after
the defeat of the Empire. so
the period between 1867 and 1876 is
known as the Restored Republic or
Triumph of the Republic. the
liberal party was divided because a part
of this group was opposed to the
presidential re-election of Benito
Juarez. -
Railroad
In 1873, during Lerdo de Tejada’s government, a railroad from Mexico to
Veracruz was inaugurated. This event implied an increase in communication and economy, as well as changes in the population’s activities.
