Mary Helen MacKillop was born 15th January in Fitzroy Melbourne. Her parents were Alexander MacKillop and Flora MacDonald. -
First Holy Communion
Mary Mackillop made her first Holy Communion. -
Founding of The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart
Mary with the help of father Julian Edmund Tenison found a religious society called The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. They lived in poverty and dedicate themselves to educating poor children. Mary was the founding member. It was founded in Penola on 19 March 1866 and approved by Bishop Laurence Sheil. -
Opening of Mary's first school
Fr Woods and Mary Mackillop opened their first school in a stable, due to the lack of Catholic education in South Australia. -
Establishment of order in Brisbane, Queensland
Mary traveled to Brisbane to open an order based in Kangaroo point. -
Excommunication
21 September 1871 Mary was excommunicated from the Sister of St Joseph. -
Bishop Sheil revoked the excommunication
Bishop Sheil on his death bed revoked Mary's sentence of excommunication. -
MacKillop travelled to Rome
MacKillop travelled to Rome to get the popes approval of her congregation. During this time she traveled around Europe learning new ways to teach students. -
Mary returns from Rome
When Mary returned from Rome she got approval from the Pope for her sisters and the work they did, -
Father Julian Edmund Tenison woods passed away
This was a sad time for Mary as Woods was her guidance for most of her life. -
Death
Mary Mackillop passed away 8th August 1909 in Sydney. Mary helped many people during her lifetime and after she died, the Sisters of St Joseph kept on doing work she had started. -
Mary Mackillop was Beatified
Pope John Paul II beatified Mary. Veronica Hopson, dying of leukaemia in 1961 prayed to Mary and claimed that she cured her. -
Mary's second miracle
Congregation in Rome recognising a second miracle, the curing of Kathleen Evans lung and brain cancer in the 1990s. -
Canonisation of Mary
Mary was canonised by Pope Benedict XVI making her the first Australian to be recognised as a saint by the Catholic Church.
