Facing the challenge
The only way Catholics could keep up their faith was to say their
Traditional prayers such as the Rosary. -

30 percent of the first fleet convicts were baptised catholic. -
Irish convicts
There were mainly Irish convicts who had little or no contact with the
catholic faith and interest in different religion. -
Church
In 1788, Governor Phillip ordered all convicts to come to Sunday church services, which were to be conducted by the Anglican minister Rev Richard,johnaston. -
Challenge and change
A penal colony ,any mission to NSW had to have permission of the
British Authorities and the governor. -
Fr James Dixon
Fr Dixon was caught up in the reaction to the Irish Rebellion of 1798
And was transported to Australia, arriving in January 1800. -
The First public Mass
The first Official Catholic Mass celebrated in Australia occurred in
Sydney on the 15th of May 1803
