Phonograph

1877

The first machine to record sound and playback was the phonograph, The american inventor Thomas Edison invented in 1877.

Gramophone

1888

11 years later, in 1888 Emile Berliner invented a similar phonograph called gramophone but this new invention, instead of a cylindrical drum the sounds were stored on a flat disc.

Walkman

1979

Nobutoshi Kihara was an employee of Sony corporation and invented the walkman in 1979, in Japan. Walkman’s could not record sound but they were an instant success.

Compact discs

1980

Compact discs invented by electronics companies Philips and Sony in Japan around the 1980 the sound is recorded digitally as a series of numbers. A compact disc player uses a laser beam to sean the disc and play the sound.

Now all the people listen to music on their computers or download music from the internet onto their mobile phones.
