Reconstruction Timeline

  • 13th Amendment

    The thirteenth amendment was approved in January of 1865. It was then ratified in December. This amendment abolished slavery in the United States.
  • Ku Klux Klan

    The KKK was created in Tennessee at the end of 1865. This was a very racist group. They were against the rights for colored people. It was a clan is most southern states.
  • First Reconstruction Act

    This act was passed over Johnston's veto. This act stated that the Southern States would be readmitted to the Union following the American Civil War.
  • A former slave was elected lieutenant governor of Louisiana

    Oscar Dunn is elected for lieutenant governor of Louisiana in the year of 1868. This was a big thing because he was one of the only three former slaves that was elected lieutenant governor during this Reconstruction period.
  • 14th Amendment

    The 14th amendment was adopted on July 9, 1868. This amendment was made and it stated "All people born or naturalized int the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the state they were born in."
  • Former Union General becomes President

    Ulysses S. Grant becomes president in 1869. Although he allied with the Radical Republicans in Congress he does not provide strong leadership for Reconstruction.
  • Hiram Revels

    In 1870 Hiram Revels was elected to the U.S Senate as the first colored senator. This is a big thing because this made history and a lot of people probably did not like this decision.
  • 15th Amendment

    The 15th amendment was a huge thing, because it gave all males the right to vote, no matter what color they were. So now all men can vote even if you are not only white and wealthy.
  • Joseph H. Rainey

    Joseph Rainey was the first colored member sworn in as a member of the U.S House of Representatives. This was huge because this made history of the first colored man to join the U.S House of Representatives.
  • Freedmen's Bureau Abolished

    The freedmen's Bureau was created on March 3rd of 1865. It was made to to aid refugees of the U.S Civil War.
