Sharecropping in the South
Share cropping was when land owners provided housing, tools, and seed in return for peoples services. The share croppers would then receive a share of the crop in return. -
Black Universities Established
Fisk and Howard Universities opened up to allow black people to receive an education. Along with these many other primary and secondary schools also opened. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
Civil Rights Act of 1866 gave African Americans citizenship and forbade the passing of discriminatory laws in the states. This was a step in the right direction although most states still used discriminatory laws passed before the civil rights act. -
The Fourteenth Amendment Passed
The Fourteenth Amendment addressed citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws, and was proposed in response to issues related to former slaves following the American Civil War. -
The Fifteenth Amendment Ratified
The Fifteenth Amendment was ratified and gave African American Men the rights to vote.
