Freedmen's Bureau
The Freedmen's Bureau helped African Americans adjust to freedom. It provided food, clothing, and medical services. The bureau helped set up schools, staffed by mostly teachers from the North. Lastly, it helped people either buy land or work for a fair amout of money. -
Lincoln's Assassination
On April 14th John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in the back of the head. He was shot while he was watching a play at Ford's Theater. Booth broke his leg while he was jumping out a window. After that he got caught and went to jail. -
The 13th Amendment
The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution officially abolished. Continues to prohibit slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. Also congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. -
Black Codes
The Black Codes were laws the controlled freed former slaves. These laws gave the African Americans less freedom and it gave the right for the plantation owners to expliot the African Americans. With the Black Codes the African Americans were not able to own nor rent land. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
The Civil Rights Act of 1866 granted full citizenship to African americans and gave the federal government the power to intervene in state affairs to protect their rights. Thhis law over turmed black codes. It also contradicted the 1857 Dred Scott decision of the Supreme Court, which had ruled that African Americans were not citizens. -
Sharecropping
Sharecropping was another way to have slavery. African Americans were not allowed to own land because of Black Codes so they, rented land off of the whites and worked for them. The worst part of all was that the African Americans had to give a share of their makings. -
Ku Klux Klan
The Lu Klux Klan also known as the KKK was a group of people that used violence to deny rights of freed African Americans. The members wore white sheets and hoods over there heads. They killed and abused many African Americans. -

First Reconstruction Act
The First Reconstruction Act passes in 1867 and called for the creation of a new government in the 10 southern states. Tennessee, whcih ratified, kept the government and rejoined the Union. This divided the 10 Southern in to 5 military districts. -
Tenture of Office Act
Tis act prohibited the president from removing government officials. Including, members of his own cabinet, without the Senate's approval. -
Second Reconstruction Act
The Second Reconstruction Act was approved in 1867. It required the military commanders to register voters. Also it prepared for states constitutional conventions. -
The 14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment stated that anyone that was born in the United States was considered a citizen. It also said that nobody can take away your citizenship unbless through a process of law. Lastly, it said that anyone that was a citizen had equal rights, -
Whites Tried To Stop African Americans From Voting
Southerns tried to sneak and make Africans not able to vote. They passed the Literacy Test which was, African Americans had to read the bible and pass a test to vote. Also they passed the poll tax which, made African Americans to pay a tax to vote. Lastly, they passed a Grandfather Clause which said, if your grandfather could not vote you couldn't. -
The 15th Amendment
The 15th Amendment allowed all citizens to vote. No matter what the race, size, or shape was. This Amendment was passed in the year of 1870. -
Amnesty Act
Liberal Republicans helped pass the Amnesty Act, which pardoned most Southern Conferderates. Now almost all the white Southerners could vote and hold office gain. This act changed the political balance within the South. It restored full rights to all people who supported the Democratic political Party. -
African Americans in Government
During the reconstruction, African Americans were able to participate in Government. Blanche K. Bruce from Mississippi, got elected senator. He was a formar slave that escaped and thaught in school with African Americans. In 1869 he went back to Mississippi and entered politics, and then was elected to the United States Senate in 1874. -
The New South
The South was convinced that they had a storng and settled economy. They argued that the confederates becxause the South's industry didn't add up to the North's. Textile mills and tobacco manufacturing sprung up all over the South. -
Segregation
Most public schools usually allowed whites to attend them. Even though African Americans had a schools, they were not as good as white schools. After that they made Jim Crow Laws that seperated most public places. -
Plessy Vs Ferguson
The Supreme Court decided to uphold segregation in their decision in the case Plessy Vs Ferguson. This allowed segrigation as long as black's had the same public places as white's did.
