The Freedmen's Bureau was created to help former slaves and poor whites obtain food, shelter, and clothing. Also to establish schools. Also to do many other things to help freedmen. -
End of the Civil War (Appomattox)
The village in Virgina, where Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9, 1865, ending the Civil War. -
Abraham Lincoln Assassinated
This even took place 5 days after Lee surrendered to General Grant. On this day President Lincoln gave a speech from the balcony of the White House. During his speech a man named John Wilkes Booth decided to assassinate this President. -
13th Amendment Ratified
This offically ended slavery. The ratification of the 13th Amendment came eight motnhs after the Civil War. When this Admendment took place the institution of slavery ceased to even exist in the U.S! -
Henry McNeal Turner elected to Senate
He preached and he was also a postmaster, but people forced him to leave. -
14th Amendment Ratified
This Amendment gave people citizenship which included former slaves. Many people tried using the 14th Amendment for example the womens right to vote. African Americans did not have the right to vote until the 15th Amendment took place in 1870. -
15th Amendment
This Amendment gave African American men the right to vote. The promise of the 15th Amendment didnt take place for almost a century. Majority of African American men took the passage of the "Voting Rights Act" in the South before being registered to vote. -
Georgia Readmitted to the Union
Georgia did this twice. Republicans wanted the state to be considered a Confederate State. -
Election of Rutherford B. Hayes
While president he oversaw the end of Reconstruction.
