Lincoln is shot
Lincoln is shot in Ford's Theater by John Wilkes Booth. This is an important event because Lincoln had one view and the president soon to be, Andrew Johnson, had a completely different view. -
KKK
The Ku Klux Klan Becomes an uprise during this time period. This organization was composed of mostly Confffederate Army veterans. This was a secret organatization in the South for the purpose of reestablishing white authority. -
Civil Rights Acts of 1866
This granted citenship and equal protection under the law to African Americans. This was great new for the African Americans because it gave them some freedom to do things they were never allowed to do. -
Reconstruction Act of 1867
This ablosihed governments formed in the former Confederate states. It also divided those states into five military districts and set up requirments for readmission to the Union. -
14th Amendment
This makes all persons "born or naturalized in the Untied States" citizens. It stipulates that states that prevented male citizens from voting would lose a percentage of their congressional seats. This barred most Confederate leaders from holding political offices -
15th Amendment
This states that no one can be kept from voting because of "race, color, or previous condition of servitude" This is great for people being not able to vote because of different reasons. -
Enforcement Act of 1870
This Act protected the voting rights of African Americans. It also gave the federal government power to enforce the 15th Amendment.
