Reconstruction Era Timeline

  • Civil War Ends

    Civil War Ends
    After the civil war ends reconstruction begins and slavery still existed in the border states. In January of 1865 Congress passed the 13th amendment making slavery Illegal through all america. After the civil war slaves still did not have simple citizenship or the right to vote.
  • Freedman's Bureau

    Freedman's Bureau
    The Freedman's Bureau's goal was to provide relief to southerners white and black. It was the first large scale relief program that provided food,clothing,fuel and medical services. Also providing education to former slaves who could not read or write.
  • Lincoln Assassinated

    Lincoln Assassinated
    Abraham Lincoln was assassination in April of 1865 by a man named John Wilkes Booth at Fords Theater. Andrew Johnson became president.
  • 13th Amendment Ratified

    13th Amendment Ratified
    13th Amendment made slavery Illegal throughout the entire U.S. It didn't take effect until December 18th of 1865. 3.5 million people were now free.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    All people born in the U.S were now citizens. Without any regard of race, color. Also the right to own property and full protection of the government.
  • Memphis Race Riots

    Memphis Race Riots
    This massacre occurred after the civil war and the tension leading up to it was fueled by racial tensions in Memphis. Forty six African Americans died and two White people died as well.
  • New Orleans Race Riots

    New Orleans Race Riots
    Former confederates and policemen raided around. Both blacks and delegates were attacked and were shot and killed even after they put up their surrender flags. Federal troops had to come and protect the people under attack. 100 people were injured in the fighting and thirty four blacks and three radical whites were injured.
  • 1st Reconstruction Act

    Known as the military reconstruction act, This the start of the acts where southern states would be readmitted into the union. This was turned into a law and it was passed over a veto of President Andrew Johnson.
  • 2nd Reconstruction Act

    This held military leaders in response for the people of whom they commanded by helping them register to vote and also hold elections in the territories that they are in charge of.
  • 3rd Reconstruction Act

    3rd Reconstruction Act
    The third reconstruction act gave the supreme court power to oversee to five of the union generals in five states in the south. Which included several states in the confederacy.
  • 14th Amendment Ratified

    14th Amendment Ratified
    Granted citizenship to all people born and naturalized in the United States. This amendment overturned the Dred Scott case. Guaranteed Due
  • 4th Reconstruction Act

    4th Reconstruction Act
    By August of 1868 six states that once succeeded from the union have been readmitted back into the union. This is after ratifying the fourteenth and fifteenth amendment which gave black men the right to vote.
  • Grant Elected President

    Ulysses S Grant was elected in the republican party. The highlight of this is the fact that he was the leader of the union army and brought them to win as Robert E Lee surrendered to the Union army.

    Reconstruction acts only gave the right to vote to black men in the south. Ratified in 1870 no citizen could be denied vote because of someones race, color , or previous condition of servitude.

    Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first black senator elected in Mississippi. Also seated as the first black member of the senate. Their were democrats who wanted to block him.
  • 1st Black Governor Elected

    P. B. S Pinchback was the first black governor elected in the U.S. Also a union army officer.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1875

    Civil Rights Act of 1875
    This was in response to the violence enacted upon black black people during this time of Reconstruction. The bill passed with the vote of 38 to 26.
  • Compromise of 1876

    Compromise of 1876
    The compromise that ended Reconstruction. Rutherford Hayes election led to the disenfranchisement of black voters.This also was a unwritten deal between congressman and it led to the end of reconstruction and the pulling out of military in the south durng the presidential election.
  • End of Reconstruction

    End of Reconstruction
    Financial problems in the white house is the reason of the end of reconstruction. Also a new problem was emerging the panic and the people of the government wanted to put their money somewhere else. A new found race system had began in the south and was the point of disenfranchisement of black voters and black people.
